This is in addition to the fact that their house seems to be the hang out with loud music and tons of teenagers hanging around in the street at all hours (I live on a dead-end street).
Normally, I let it go... If it ends before midnight or is a weekend, it's annoying but I will tolerate it.
Well last night at about 12:30, a carload of kids show up and they are blasting music so loud my house is shaking. After about an hour, I finally had enough as it was too noisy to sleep, and I called the cops.
I feel horrible and like a jerk.
The crazy part is this kid's parents are home and do nothing about it. They must have sound-proofed their room because I don't know how they can stand the noise.
Please tell me I am not the only one with annoying neighbors.
I gave you more than I ever got back
You left me here to forget about that
All the things you thought you had have gone
Let that be a lesson to you

Parties every weekend and several nights every week. Unfortunately (for them), there was a shooting there two years ago a few days before Christmas. Fortunate for US because the partying has stopped since then. (Loads of legal issues, etc since the homeowner, who killed one of the intruders, worked for the government).
Our (master) bedroom is right next to their side patio- where the chairs, grill, and easy access to the garage fridge are located. Sigh...
Like you, we let it go since we didn't want to be "those" neighbors, but thinking back, we SHOULD have called the police.
We probably would have been doing ourselves (and everyone else on the cul de sac) a favor.
WH#2 (SorryinSac)- Killed himself in our home 10 days after being served divorce docs.
XWH #1 - legally married 18yrs. 12+ OW (that I know of).
I edit often for clarity/typos.
Seriously you have every right to expect to be treated with courtesy, and have your neighbors follow the norms of society.
I personally wouldn't tolerate it being loud past 9pm. I get up really early, and I value my peace and quiet. I'm guessing the parents are partying right along with the kids, or want to be the cool parents, therefore no boundaries are set.
I say call the cops every damn time. They will get the hint and move it to another kids house with tolerable neighbors, or they will learn to be quiet after 9pm. It's not like you are saying you don't want them there at all.
I say good for you.
There is no way I could live in a subdivision, I am rather intolerant of rude people.
Lived in apartment few years ago. The couple behind our unit? Loud, nasty porn star sex like every.single.night. Not kidding. I could tell when she was on her period because I would sleep well for 5-6 nights. Then like clockwork, banging, moaning, grunting, slapping, howling.
I get that sex is fun. But wild monkey sex every night??? I tried to ignore it. Tried to give the benefit of the doubt. The guy had been deployed and I figured he needed his release. Make up for lost time and all that.
After THREE MONTHS, I finally had enough. Bedtime became a horrific drag for me. I knew what I would hear for the next 1-2 hours. (QS slept thru it every night!) Called management. They were embarrassed and gave me the cell number to the night watchman or whatever he was called.
That night when the sex got loud, I called him up and he banged their door down till they answered. He explained that their...um....extracurriculars were to be private and not shared with the other three units in our block and to please be considerate. Was *much* quieter after that.
You have every right to want peace and quiet. Those neighbors don't own the street. They should be considerate to those around them. Don't feel like a jerk. Its your street too. And I bet you aren't the only person fed up with the party animals.
Our houses are very close together... if I can hear and feel it clear as day, I can only imagine what it sounds like in their house.
Did it get quieter after the police showed up?
Although maybe we should say towns "usually" have ordinances - depends on the locale.
Usually the ordinance has a time cutoff (ours is 10:00 PM) and a db limit at the property line (ours is 60 db). The town even has a db meter for checking on things.
It's perfectly possible to still be within those limits and be a really obnoxious neighbor. Weed whipping, for instance, could take you all weekend ...
We do have noise ordinances because I checked before I called - 9 pm on weeknights and 10 pm on weekends.
I just got home from work and then are at it again... dad is out back doing yard work and ignoring it. It's obnoxious but at least it's early and I'm not trying to sleep.
If they're still going after 9pm, please call the police again (and every single time it happens going forward).
Hopefully they'll get the message eventually.
This is one of the reasons I don't drink anymore.
I was staying with my parents the summer before I moved to Germany. One evening, my mom and I were drinking margaritas, and I had quite a few.
My parents lived across the street from a gas station that was the big "hang-out" place in this very small town. All the kids had to do in this place was "cut town" (drive from one end of the town to the other, turn around, and drive back. Lather, rinse, repeat) They would park at the Mini Mart and impress everyone with their amazing sound systems. The more bass, the better.
This particular night, about 2 am, I had enough. I had to work the next morning and was PISSED. So I grabbed a baseball bat, stormed across the street and started screaming "EVERYBODY JUST SHUT UP AND GO HOME!!! DON'T YOU KNOW PEOPLE ARE TRYING TO SLEEP????" (You have to imagine that in a drunk southern girl slur/drawl) My mom, who always has my back, grabbed the only weapon she could find: a broom. So there I was, swinging a baseball bat around, screaming at the top of my lungs. And my mom, with curlers in her hair, swinging her broom around saying, "That's right! You tell 'em HF!"
Someone in the store called the cops. The police officer who responded was a woman I'd known since high school. She took me by the hand and led me back to my house.
At least everybody shut up and went home. And I finally got to sleep.
But that's why it's a very bad idea for me to drink tequila.
And also why I live half a mile from ANYONE else now.

(Hi from BWI as I check in during my short layover!)
My fiance and I live in an apartment complex which we jokingly refer to as "Shady Pines" because most of our neighbors are 70yrs old or older.
Our landlord told us that it was a VERY quiet place. And it is. Luckily we only share one wall, but we just got a new neighbor, so we're trying to see if we can hear her, and vice versa. (the previous tenant was in Med School and was never home--always at school)
So far, so good. We met her when she moved in, and I asked her to please let me know if our TV was ever too loud or if our puppy bothered her.
I hope that was a hint that we like NOT hearing anything from that side of the wall!
about 10 yrs ago I lived in a basement apartment of a home that had been converted to about 12 units. The tenant upstairs from me was SO LOUD. They stomped around, played loud music, had parties on WEEKDAYS...and the landlord wouldn't do shit about it. I went up there and asked them to please turn the music down/be quieter as I could hear EVERYTHING as though I was in the room with them...and they would say "oh sure, sure" but get LOUDER. So, I was not afraid to call the landlord at 3 am and tell him that the party was STILL going on up there--and when he started saying "I'll handle it in the morning", I started calling the cops.
After 3 noise complaints to the police, the landlord got fined.
The parties stopped.
Do what you have to do, Whalers! That behavior is unacceptable.
