I moved in to my apartment last month.
Met most of my neighbors and have really enjoyed slowly getting to know them.
The lady in the apartment next door to me I met once. I haven't seen her since right before I moved in.
I have been smelling some awful cat urine in the hallway, very, very strong.
Come to find out, the lady next door has two cats.
My other neighbor told me she is not home much at all. It's obvious that the litter box is not getting changed much at all.
I feel so bad for the cats!! I don't mind her having the cats, I volunteer almost every Saturday at a cat rescue adoption event.
I am looking for some advice. Should I speak to her first? Or go to the rental office and talk to who is in charge?
It's starting to get and stay warm here and we are upstairs,I can only imagine what the smell is going to be like when it gets really hot.
Thanks.

I'd try to speak with her first, then if that doesn't fix the problem, go to the rental office.

Nope I would go to the rental office. Unless she has the litter box close to the door, which I doubt, then they are possibly destroying that apartment, and honestly if she isn't home enough to change their box, they are probably suffering from neglect.
Most cats quit using their box when it gets nasty. So these kitties are probably destroying the carpeting. Ick.
In the meantime I would put some renuzit on the floor by her door.

Are the doors to your apartments inside a hall like a hotel or do you have separate outside entrances like a house or condo?
The reason I ask this is because when my sister had cats at her house it used to smell like cat urine at her front door. She cleaned the box daily and it was in the basement. The problem was a neighborhood cat that was left outside would spray my sister's front door. If the apartment doors are outside this could be the issue. Maybe a stray is marking the door because it knows there are cats inside.
Just a thought.
