A friend of a friend was murdered on Father's Day. She was a single mom (as is the friend) and she started dating a guy back in Nov. He had everybody snowed- even her daughter (18), who found her mom beaten to death and covered with a blanket Sunday night.

He stole her car and ran. The next day, he halfheartedly attempted suicide by driving her car into the path of an oncoming truck.

Yesterday, the young daughter of another woman went to the news after hearing about the murder and said that the same guy stabbed her mom three times back in 1999. After her mom recovered, he convinced her that she fell on the knife and asked her to marry him (presumably so she couldn't testify against him). The charges were lowered and he was sentenced to 10 years, but only served five. If they hadn't let him out, this wouldn't have happened.

The lady he killed and her daughter had NO IDEA of his violent past, nor that he was still legally M to the woman he stabbed. His W was too afraid of him and felt that filing for D would draw his attention back toward her.

I want to encourage all of my single friends out there to perform a thorough background check before agreeing to a date and I'm just wondering what would be the most reliable way to do that?

Anyone have any experience with instant check mate? I ran a check on this guy, but didn't pay for the full report- I just wanted to see what the process was like before suggesting it to anyone. The preliminary check said this guy had 10+ criminal records.

I just don't want to see this happen to anyone else. I know ALL instances of this stuff can't be prevented, but this one COULD HAVE.

The New Beginnings crowd might have some experience with this?

A good start is to just check for court records. In many places, these are open and can be viewed by anyone. I'm in MD, and it's easy to just do a search on name and see all court records (at least, for cases within the state).

That's just frightening.

I'm sure her family is relieved that he is dead.
