We unexpectedly settled today during mediation! Lawyers need to finalize the paperwork and hopefully I will be divorced in 6 weeks! It is an odd feeling -- I didn't win or lose. I am glad to be finished with this chapter and 2+ years of hell, but nervous also. I'll be in the poorhouse, but I protected my kids as best as possible. And I had a good lawyer who wouldn't recommend I settle unless the offer was at least as good as I could expect from court... Ready to move forward!

I have seen a lot lately about mediation. That is not something that my lawyer has mentioned. What exactly is it?

An unbiased mediator goes back and forth between the two parties to try and reach an agreement. It can be done with or without lawyers present. Often court ordered before a judge will hear a case.

We started without lawyers (but we both had consulted one), reached partial agreement and then met again with lawyers to reach final agreement.
