Sorry DS...from the news:
The stunning revelation emerged from anthropologist Christine R Yano - who has been curating an exhibition about the global phenomenon.
Speaking to the LA Times, she explained that the Sanrio corporation had dropped the bombshell during her preparations.
"That's one correction Sanrio made for my script for the show. Hello Kitty is not a cat," she said.
"She is a little girl. She is a friend. But she is not a cat. She's never depicted on all fours. She walks and sits like a two-legged creature.
"She does have a pet cat of her own, however, and it's called Charmmy Kitty."
And she elaborated on the reason that Hello Kitty was designated as British.
"Hello Kitty emerged in the 1970s, when the Japanese and Japanese women were into Britain.
"They loved the idea of Britain. It represented the quintessential idealised childhood, almost like a white picket fence. So the biography was created exactly for the tastes of that time."
So now you know.

My daughter, on the subject of Hello Kitty:
Little Green: "Mommy, she doesn't have a mouf. That's weird Mommy. How does she eat?"
She just eats souls and you don't need a mouf for that.

I think it's just a miscommunication. Hello Kitty is a personified cat, not a pet cat. It's like Goofy vs. Pluto.

I think you are right Crescita - the story has been updated:
UPDATE: Reached by a reporter for RocketNews24, a representative for Sanrio said, "We never said she was a human." The representative never said she was a cat.
UPDATE 2: Well, it seems there may have been some (intentional?) confusion here. When Sanrio told Yano that Hello Kitty wasn't a cat, it appears they meant she wasn't a cat in the context of what it means to be a cat in our reality, not the cartoon universe Sanrio has created.
A spokesman at Sanrio's Tokyo headquarters told Kotaku:
"Hello Kitty was done in the motif of a cat. It's going too far to say that Hello Kitty is not a cat. Hello Kitty is a personification of a cat."
The specific word that the Sanrio spokesperson used to describe Hello Kitty was "gijinka" (擬人化
, which means "anthropomorphization" or "personification."
One again, to clarify, I asked the Sanrio spokesperson, "Then, it would be going too far to say that Hello Kitty was not a cat?" The spokesperson replied, "Yes, that would be going too far."
There stock was probably taking a beating
