I gained 4 lbs over christmas that I need to lose. Not much, I know, but that is hard to do for a 55 year old post menopausee. But the good news is that WH signed us up for the GYM and we went together today. He needs to lose at least 20 lbs and get healthy. He has several (possibly) weight related conditions, high blood pressure, cholesterol, that could be helped by exercise/weight loss.
I am happy that at least I got one day at the gym! Me-BS-59

I have been watching what I eat and thought I was doing good. Of course I was stupid enough to step on the scale and the numbers have gone up. Arg. I have to ignore it and not let it get me down.
I have been doing the oatmeal for breakfast too. The grass isn't greener on the other side of the fence. It is astro turf.

I decided I am going to illicit the services from my boss and a co-worker. Both male, both who will give me crap if I gain weight. I am going to do weigh-ins with one of them each monday (can't do it this monday bc a witch-boss from another office DEMANDED I work for her). I just have to break the news to the two guys.
Okay, I have two recipes to share. One yummy and one that I term WTF (definitely a colon cleanser if I ever saw one!)
Winter Vegetable and Fish Soup (I don't like fish much, but yummy, yummy)
1tbs olive oil
1 leak, chopped
2 14oz cans of low sodium chicken broth
1 small zucchini sliced
1 cup fresh or frozen chopped broccoli
8 oz fresh or frozen halibut filets (I used Tilapia, my fav) cut into bite sized pieces.
1 cup baby spinach
1/4 fresh ground pepper to taste (I didn't have fresh; used red pepper flakes)
1 tsp dried oregano
Heat olive oil over med. heat in lrg saucepan; add leek and saute for 2 mins. Stir in broth and bring to boil
Add broccoli and zucchini and simmer for 3 mins
Add fish and simmer until it turns opaque, approx. 3 more minutes
Add spinach and seasonings and simmer for 2 more minutes then serve.
****************
"FAT Blaster" (I call it colon cleanser..I should make this for my wh bc he has issues in that area)
1 grapefruit , cut to fit juicer
2 oz ginger
1/2 jalapeno, seeded
1 cup plain nonfat soy milk
1 tbs flaxseed oil
juice first three ingredients then add last 2 and mix well Posts: 7787 | Registered: Sep 2007 | sullymeishadomi ♀ Member Member # 16305 | Posted: 11:35 AM, January 10th (Sunday), 2010 | |
Hi luv80smusic I pm'd you but thought Id add it here, too....
Breakfast, Bob's Red Mill Mighty Tasty Hot Cereal
Gluten Free and then cook up some eggs with veggies. I also found a great recipe that uses one half of whole wheat english muffin, egg (you can boil hot water then break egg into it...kind of like a fried egg without the fry). Cook up some low fat turkey bacon. The put it together using a bit of low or nonfat greek yogart (I think they said to add lemon juice to the yogart, but I lost the recipe and improvised).
A few times I used whole wheat torilla, spread nutbutter (almond...I can't eat peanut butter, too triggery bc of the sugar) and slice some banana into it and roll. Great on the run bfst or a snack.
I get most reipes from Oxygen magazine, M & Fitness Hers (both weight lifting mags), Eat clean diet (books and website) and Elanaspantry.com
I just bought Spiru-tein unsweetened simply natural original vanilla protien powder. Not high on protien (14grams) but low on sugars (no fructose that Ive seen in others) and I want to try Montel Williams protien shake (fruits of which I use frozen, yogart or soy milk, protien powder and fresh spinach). I want to investigate and see if Montel Williams has a website. He was on "The Doctors" on CBS and I taped his little segment. Suzanne Sommers and Alicia Silverstone also seem to have great ideas. Probably for those of us who need to watch our gluten intake, Suzanne Somers is good. For some of us trying to lose weight and excersize...just a bit of fyi...if you are watching your food intake (quality and quantity) and excersizing, you might see a bit of an increase in the scale from time to time, but watch your clothes. Is the scale going up a tad, but your clothes fitting differently? If so, muscle weighs more than fat...
And for those of us who think we are doing good, but clothes are fitting tighter and scale going up...don't give up hope. For a week, write down everything you eat (even if you lick ketchup off your finger) then at the end of the week look at what you ate and make adjustments.
Don't forget protien. Protien and fruits and veggies along with healthy grains. Clean protien keeps you fuller longer; fruits and veggies add those great vitamins and antioxidants. Grains are a plus (quinoa and jasmine rice are great along with oatmeal, which they say helps keep the blood clean). In my oatmeal, I try and use a bit of bee polin (there are powder and granual, but from experience, go light, too much is, well...too much ), good sugars (agave, maple flakes or sugar, and the like) and some fruits (blueberries, goji berries, etc). The tastier we make it, the more we will like it (and the more vitamins we get from the berries, etc).
And a big apology if I come off too preach. Didn't mean to. Im just in a gung ho mode. Sorry. Posts: 7787 | Registered: Sep 2007 | KInUSA ♀ Member Member # 19503 | Posted: 12:12 PM, January 10th (Sunday), 2010 | |
omg just watching the story on discovery health of the guy who won biggest loser and gained it all back
I can't imagine losing all that and gaining it back and the whole country knows...
on another note - it was 32 out and I tried to run the other day - too freakin cold plus my ipod died so I had nothing to concentrate on.
I just finished reading finally Thin by Kim Benson - loved it, her story is so touching and constantly bought tears to my eyes.
My goals this week is to eat better and drink more water - and drag the wii fit plus out atleast once

Just found this thread!
I am also very glad it's here, as I need to lose a lot of weight. I was heavy when I met WH, but of course now he says it is a problem. Ha ha, not going to work this time. I am losing it for me, not you.
I am a member of SparkPeople.com and will start a Biggest Loser Challenge that they run with different teams online. I've never done anything like that, but I thought "What the hell? I have nothing (but weight) to lose!"
I have a Wii Fit and have already lost 25 lbs. since August. I want to add Zumba and the Firm Wave to my fitness arsenal. The only thing I can't get together is the eating plan. I cannot seem to find what works for me. I did lose quite a bit 8 1/2 years ago doing "Carbohydrate Addicts" diet. Not sure if I can do that again or not. Any advice about eating plans would be most welcome! Me: 42 WS: 34 Married 12 yrs.

The heatwave down here means I'm retaining fluid to a ridiculous degree. My fingers look like sausages. I'm scared to go anywhere near the scales. Good Women.

Hi guys,
Cool to see so many starting the new year with a health kick
NAM Excellent on the couch to 5k. I started running a little in 2008 after many years of loathing running, and in 2009 I logged about 300 miles including a half marathon. This year I might be crazy enough to go for a full one If I, who would only run 90 feet between bases, can do that, then anyone can.
Someone asked about P90x. I did the first 6 weeks before tearing my hamstring in 2008. I'm a veteran gym rat and tend to be pretty sceptical to these types of DVDs, but every workout is sound, uses proper mechanics and fundamentals. If you have the space to do it, most people can do it. If you can't pass the fitness test, try doing 2-3 of the DVD's per week for a few weeks, then you should have no problem starting it. (as for the pull up, don't worry if you can't do it, few people can).
After 4-5 weeks off, I'm back on the running trail tonight, signed up for a 10 mile run in early march!
Finally, a lot of people have touched upon plateaus. These will happen as you try to re-shape your body.
The body hasn't evolved too much since the days of living of the food we gathered and the food we killed. The body focuses fully on trying to reserve energy for a "rainy day". If we do the same exercise each time, the body gets smarter and smarter and will figure out ways to do the same exercise with less energy consumption.
Great if you're in a cave hibernating for the winter, not so good if you're trying to get into shape.
Vary your exercise routine. Do interval running. Try a different route for your run or a different machine or weight for your weight session.
And the trickiest of it all....stick to it! But don't think you've lost all if you miss a day or two.
Remember, weight loss is a simple equation: calories consumed minus calories used. If there's a deficit, you WILL lose weight.

Im not going to illicit my boss's help. I don't think we had the raport I thought we were heading toward, i.e, I don't think he'd help. So, Im asking for help here. If I gain or stabalize, let me have it, please. 2x4's requested.
I weighed myself this morning. I am 5 lbs south of my all time hight. Yeow! I have not seen that weight since 1993. I 5'7-1/2" tall, big boned and a HUGE 223.8 lbs.
That is my starting weight. I will get back to you in a week from today with the new (lower, I hope) numbers. Posts: 7787 | Registered: Sep 2007 | letting_go Member Member # 13774 | Posted: 8:27 PM, January 11th (Monday), 2010 | |

Weight training is said to be great. Also research your food intake and readjust if needed (kick out sugars and refined stuff). Posts: 7787 | Registered: Sep 2007 | rollercoaster80 ♀ Member Member # 23412 | Posted: 9:10 PM, January 11th (Monday), 2010 | |

Been hitting the gym for a little over a week now. I have been walking/jogging on the treadmill for a least 30 minutes. I have gone 6 times in 10 days. I definitely see my endurance picking up - from zero to some.
I am glad we have this thread! Betrayed wife
