what activities do you enjoy Dreamboat?

Reading, watching TV, drinking vodka, and sleeping.

See the problem?

LMAO!!!!
See the problem?
Um, yes...any others? I enjoy all of those as well, sans the vodka - replace that with smoking cannabis!

Yay, Jo!

I got in another 7.5 mile bike ride tonight. My average speed was 9.8 mph, and my average pace was 6 min 4 sec per mile. According to the tracker app, one of my sprints got me close to 22 mph, for a very, very brief time.

How much has everyone lost and how did you get there? The major points, was it checking calories, cutting something out, or (sigh) working out?

I've lost 20 lbs in 6 months, but haven't lost anything in the past 2.

How do you get yourselves motivated to not eat the cheeseburger or fries, or stop at just one helping?
It's a comfort thing for me now, I used to be healthy and not eat everything in site, but now it's something I turn to and I don't know how to turn that back off.

Any help much appreciated.

Update - I've lost a total of 12 inches from my body since beginning P90X & eating clean! WOO HOO!

hi hopeful

checking calories, cutting something out, or (sigh) working out?
I combine P90X and eating clean - so that means cut back on processed & fast foods and incorporate healthy foods into my lifestyle. I also drink Shakeology, which is this kick ass protein shake, but it's like nothing else I've ever tried. I do track everything I eat, using MyFitnessPal.
How do you get yourselves motivated to not eat the cheeseburger or fries, or stop at just one helping?
I still have my moments of weakness (induced by above mentioned cannabis consumption ) where I seriously overdo it. How do I rebound? Well, I don't beat myself up for it, I get up the next day and start fresh. As long as I have more good days than bad, it balances itself out. I don't deprive myself of anything - everything in moderation, including cheeseburgers & fries. I'll just eat half the burger, or skip the bun, and just a few fries - I give the rest away because if it's in my face, it's getting inhaled!

I have the best luck when I track what I eat, and do it every day. It makes me much more aware of what I'm actually eating.

I also do need to do some sort of exercising. You know the people who are the type that have to get up and do something, that always keep busy? Yeah, that's so not me. Give me a book and a couch, and I'm happy. So I need to make myself exercise, not just to lose weight, but to be healthier.

I missed out on my bike ride because of the weather Friday after work, but I got a longer ride in this morning. I got to the spot where I have been turning around and decided I could keep going, so I did. I went about 11.5 miles total today, in 1 hour 5 minutes.

Cheeseburger and fries issue:

My husband and I just conquered this, so maybe what helped us can help others.

First: Decide if you really love burgers or if the fast-food thing is a time crunch problem or lack of planning problem more so than a craving problem.

We have desk jobs and ours was a need to just get out of the office for a mental break, if only for a drive-thru burger. We had a little of all three issues.

Our solutions:

Mental break issue: We go to a gourmet grocery where we get soups, salad, hummus torillas that are lower in fat. We can eat in at the cafe insdie or take back to work if time is a crunch. An incentive is we can pick up healthy snack items to take back to work for later if it's going to be an overtime night.

Burger craving issue: We found a brand of frozen fries we like and don't get mushy in the oven, as well as sweet potato fries we like. We make the burgers (he eats beef ones, I eat vegetarian "burgers") at home and either put in one of those thin round sandwich things Arnold's makes rather than a starchier bun. Or we eat without bun with sauteed onions and lightly sprinkle cheese on top. It's healthier than a fast-food version. Make extra burgers for later that week, pack 'em for lunch with sides, as long as burger is in the less-caloric bread or a tortilla or pita. Take along something on the side.

The planning issue: Toughest one. Lunch is difficult for us because of marathon days. The key is take A LOT of food to work, and not just a salad or frozen dinner, then get hungry and not have incentive to do it again. Take yogurt, the avocado dip and lowfat chips as a side, or a tortilla with scrambled egg inside, egg salad instead of mayo or tortilla spread with hummus (protein curbs cravings) and avocado, some raw vegies or salad and a bit of balsamic. Soup on the side is good or as a main, as long as it isn't a cup soup that's mostly salt. Or take a brown sugar to sprinkle on cooked sweet potatoes to reheat in oven as a side. Lots of stir fry veggies of all sorts over a light serving of rice to where you don't notice the rice is barely there.

The key is eating A LOT, but most of it green foods and low cal, and the fewer "white" things (bread, potatoes, white rice although rice isn't so bad comparatively) than green, yellow, fruity things.

thin round sandwich things
oh yeah! Forgot about those! They are called sandwich thins and you can get them at any grocery store. I had a burger this weekend and that was the bun - it was delicious and much healthier than a regular bun - they're whole grain or multi grain and grains are good!

hi missesjai,

Not going well for me, lunch I had shrimp pasta, not bad but I ate too much. I do that a lot when I get depressed. Having a hard time getting out of it.

How is P90X going for you? How long have you been doing that now? And biggest question, what keeps you motivated?
I did P90 a couple of months ago, but got tired of it, shock.

ok, well first things first - you've identified that you're an emotional eater and that's very common. The next step is to find healthy coping mechanisms for stress that don't include eating. We all over do it - put a plate of cookies in front of me and I'm a gonner We're all in stressful situations so it can be me even more tough than usual. What other activities interest you?

P90X is going awesome. I'm in week 2 of my 2nd month. I've lost 12 inches and 6 lbs thus far.

what keeps you motivated?
I belong to a challenge group and we're all doing P90X together - we started at the same time and will finish the 90 day round at the same time. We hold each other accountable and share post-workout pics to prove we actually did the workout. All of us do it - we don't care about vanity, so you'll see us sweaty, red faced, hair messed up, in complete exhaustion, BUT, it keeps us motivated because if we don't post, our coach will call us out on it. Honestly, if it weren't for this group and my coach, I would've quite after the first week. Not to mention, my body's changing and people are noticing. It's always motivating to hear others acknowledge your efforts. P90X is tough - no question. But, I plan on doing another round in the fall after I do the 60 day Insanity program.

I just wanted to share something for people who may be stalled or who feel that they are eating within calorie limits and exercising and the weight is not coming off.

I started seeing a nutritionist in January who devised an eating plan for me. I have been journaling all food and exercise. I am eating within limits that for my current weight should cause me to lose.

I have lost 28 lbs but have been stuck. By stuck I mean I am working hard and losing 1 lb every 3 weeks.

I recently had bloodwork done and they told me my Vitamin D levels are low. I am also hypothyroid so that also inhibits vitamin D absorbtion. I have been taking 2000 IU per day but now am taking 4000 IU per day.

I found many interesting articles online linking vitamin D deficiency to the inability to lose weight even while eating properly and exercising.

I am on week 2 of increasing my Vitamin D and already the scale is beginning to move.

I just thought I would share the info.

Even though I had a slug week last week, I still did manage to get some exercise every day but 2. Mind you, sometimes it is just lifting weights for 10-15 minutes but at least it is something. And yesterday I had a really long walk -- 50 minutes. Even the dog was tired I was not able to walk this morning because I was helping DD with homework. But today is my day for weights (I do them every other day).

One bummer is that my treadmill bit the dust this weekend. I am not surprised since it is over 15 years old. But the treadmill was going to be my fallback plan for when I cannot/do not walk in the morning in the neighborhood (I don't like walking during the day because the neighbors are too chatty and catty...) Now I need to decide whether to buy a new treadmill.

I am still doing well with my eating. I am eating at or just below WW points everyday. But I am still drinking like a fish. I know I need to cut way back in order to really lose weight. But not this month. Maybe next month, maybe not

I weigh tomorrow. I don't think I last anything, but we will see. I am ok with not losing for a week.

UR,

Thank you for the information about Vitamin D. I'm deficient, and forget to take my vitamin rather often. I can't figure out how I'm not losing weight as a low-carb vegetarian. (I mean, how many calories can a high-fiber, low-sugar breakfast bar and a lot of green veggies really have???) cut out the pasta and potatoes already, and eat very, very little bread.

My thyroid tests OK, but maybe Vitamin D prohibits proper even if thyroid levels are OK.
