"old Man's War" by John Scalzi

I'm surprised how much I'm enjoying it.

I thought I wanted a career, but I discoved that I just like paychecks.

I'm cruising this thread looking for some easy but entertaining fiction ideas. It seems like everything I have picked up to read this summer is just BLAH and I don't finish it, same with movies. I told IC I think its me, she laughed and said nah, she was having the same problem.

LA, keep at it if you start losing attention. It's worth it.

I liked Before I Go To Sleep! Some of my best reads this summer - A Tap On the Window, Is This Tomorrow, and Orphan Train.

Am I the only one who doesn't love Unbroken? Every couple of months I pick it up again and try to get into it, and at this point in the story we're at the Berlin Olympics. It is so very slow. I feel like I've been reading forever, and have moved an inch through this man's life.

I've tried picking up where I left off on the audio version, but again just feel like in the hour plus of my commute, the story barely moves. I feel like I'm pushing a boulder up a hill.

Does it pick up when he goes to war?

circe - I dunno! I blasted right through that book...
I *think* it's foundation-laying, so you really know who Louie is - and where he comes from, for later in the book.
Also, I just thought of this - some stories you/me may be used to - we read for the writing skill, the turn of phrase as well as the story, kwim?
One thing I did notice about the author - she stays way out of the way of the story, she lets it "tell itself"...that might be part of the uphill deal as well.

Keep plugging!

I have 5 books going right now.

Behold the Burning Night by J. Gordon Smith
Easy Bake Coven by Liz Schultz
The Bones of Others by Vickie McKahan
Apocalypse Island by Mark Edward Hall
I am Automaton by Edward P. Cardillo

I've been trying to read the last one for a couple of weeks now. Very frustrating.

And the Mountains Echoed by Khaled Hosseini. I just started it, but I am sure it will be awesome. I liked The Kite Runner and LOVED A Thousand Splendid Suns. He is a great storyteller.
