Just started reading this and loving it so far.

I hear it is a BBC series which is also on PBS.

I will have to look for it.

It is set in 1950's Britain, specifically The Docklands in London, a very poor area at the time.

The life of every man is a diary in which he means to write one story, and writes another; and his humblest hour is when he compares the volume as it is with what he vowed to make it.

I love these sorts of books.

I generally don't see a movie if I've read the book--usually disappointed. I wonder if it works the same way if you like the movie?

I try not to see a movie until I have read the book, but just occasionally I have.

I can't remember a time when I didn't enjoy reading a book after seeing the movie.
