I will actually be staying with a friend, not with my brother. She lives further north... ? Not sure the neighborhood, but she said it is walking distance to a train station. What is the Chicago train called again? Not metro... They laughed at me last time for calling it metro.

I'll be happy to meet up with folks anywhere that the train system can get me.

Ama, I would LOVE to meet you for dinner!

I have lived in Chicago all my life and currently live just 20 minutes from Lincoln Park.

The trains are called the "L" or subway. "L" is for elevated. Also called CTA - Chicago Transit Authority.

Yours is the Metro. I have been to DC and rode on it from a campground we stayed at.

The rumors about being unsafe are not true. In certain neighborhoods ofcourse, but all cities are like that.

Let me know. It would be great!

FWH and I lived in Chicago. We just moved to southern Indiana (my home town) after living there for 17 years.

We still have family there. Planning some trips back in the next year, would love to to be able coordinate a dual purpose visit.

Do you mean the Metra? The L is the elevated subway like train, the Metra is the communter trains that go out to the suburbs.

I lived in the Chicago burbs from birth until my late 20's. My office was in Lincoln Park. Man I miss Chicago.

See now I'm hungry for an italian beef or some Armand's pizza damnit!

Have a great time.

No, I mean metro, like our train system here in DC is called. I tend to generalize. I call the LA system the metro, the NYC system the metro, the Chicago system the metro.

I thought that's what you meant.

I remember being confused when I visited DC when I was 19 because we called our train system the Metra and DC's was the Metro. I was on a choir tour for college, I was probably a little bit drunk at the time.

What do you guys think, is $262 a decent price for tickets? Or should I wait?

Keep in mind this is over Labor Day, and I'm flying on weekend days (not a lot of flexibility, no cheap Tuesday flights )

Um, nevermind. I was remembering wrong, thought they were 350$ last time I looked, not 250$.

Wait, Ama, wait. Patience.

I read somewhere recently that 6 weeks is supposed to be the *optimal* time for airfare.

Get too close to your date and they will gouge because you don't have so much flexibility. Too far in advance and they will take advantage. At about 6wks they are trying to ensure full flights.

Have you checked Amtrak? $262 over Labor day sounds pretty good to me, but I, too, have heard 6 weeks ahead is optimum.

There's no way I'm spending however many hours it would take to train from DC to Chicago!

ETA: Looked it up. 18 hours each way! Overnight... $239 each way if I want a bed instead of a chair.

Nope, I'll stick with my 2 hour direct flight from my metro accessible airport

I, too, live about 35 minutes north of Chicago.
