To be honest, I saw Serenity before I watched the series. One of the questions I had was "How did these disparate people become crew?" You've got a well educated doctor and his sister (and what's up with *her*???), a preacher, a more than a little naive engineer, a somewhat dense mercenary who's only real concern is what's in it for him, a "Companion" who is essentially a high end call girl, a pilot who likes playing with plastic dinosaurs and such and his wife who can kick serious butt and if course Serenity's owner/captain who can be mercenary and something of a softie by turns.

As for the Reavers, yeah, Serenity does give a lot away when it comes to them if you haven't seen the series first. I thought they were butt-ugly in both, just slightly more human than your average zombie.

And River, well there have been a few situations where she didn't go in, kick butt and save the day.

IMO, Firefly was one of thize series where you had to do some thinking to follow and make sense of... which is probably why it got cancelled. It wasn't the predominant mindless entertainment.

total tangent of geekery

I just need to own up to the hersey: I think Firefly is a really shitty show and the only reason it's any good is because the actors saved it. There is no meaningful dialogue that can't be swapped between any other character and still work unless it's sexual in nature and even then half the time it's still so dumb it makes Lucas look like a fucking romance era master, the science part of the sci-fi is worse than Star Trek over explaining everything and the same 3 conventions used every other episode - OMG we found something floating in a space lane AGAIN WOOOOOO - too much for me. Only Joss Whedon could fuck up Cowboys in Space. I saw Serenity first and thought it was great, though, so I stand by my conviction that he should stick to movies and gtfo of TV since there's never going to be a new Buffy episode.

As for SW, I feel the need to defend my gushing over the cartoons. Yeah ewoks were stupid and Eps 1-3 are trash. CTN: Clone Wars is still on par with Empire IMO. Mostly because it's a team of writers, including his youngest daughter, and him funding it while otherwise just exercising veto power. If anything Lucas actually saved the franchise from the downward spiral of interminable stupid that is the EU (FUCK YOU ZAHN IM SHOUTING THAT IN MY ANGRY SHATNER VOICE). The CTN series even made Jar Jar Binks a character I enjoyed watching. It redeemed that fucking character. Granted, the Clone Troopers using him like they had Weaponized Stupid is probably what did it but even that.

I take away a feeling from the series like it's Lucas apologizing for being a dick for decades. The way the Jedi are depicted in the series show them as individuals adhering to a difficult standard and how a lot of them fail to hold to it. It's kind of neat.

Also, Jango Fett was not a mandalorian.

Also also, the Tartovsky series was great too but the style was not really appealing to kids. Grievous was too scary.

sorry I will stop gushing about the star wars cartoon.

ps vader would totally demolish voldemort.

Yes, he would force-choke the s*** out of him! And tell him that his lack of faith is disturbing.

Not to mention that all of those hoarcruxes are planet bound, on the same planet. Vader aint above destroying a planet with billions of people just to prove a point.

A further difference between geeks and dorks.

Geeks have opinions about such mythical fights, dorks care enough about the answers to argue about the rules of the encounter.

LOL Wow! I've been swamped all day and haven't had a chance to check it till just now. Quite the response, thanks everyone.

So my brother has the firefly series and serenity so I can pick that up tommorow and start watching them. He was all excited and wants to just marathon through the movie, something like a 14 hour watching party lol. Then I figure I can start from the reboot on Doctor Who with netflix. and somewhere in there I need to download some of the suggested books :)

I have Star Wars covered though, I've always been a huge fan. Had all the figures growing up, multiple halloween costumes, and camped out for the re-release (all pre-M cause StbxWW would NEVER have gone for it).

I think my cousin has the BSG series too so I need to borrow them somewhere in there.

Looks like I've got a full study schedule lol!

PS: By the definitions given I'm pretty sure I fall into the geek catagory, maybe with a bit of nerd thrown in

(edited for spelling)

Oh yeah, and I've seen a couple episodes of archer here at the firehouse and it was funny as hell! I'll need to check netflix for that too!

I've been trying to get my former FWB into Doctor Who. I keep telling him that all I want out of life right now is someone to cuddle with, start from the beginning and watch old Doctor Who episodes, and eat warm baked cookies and drink some wine. He's not interested for some reason. You could talk to him for me about how important it is to stay fresh on your geek-hood.

Oh my gosh I love this thread. It's always great to find fellow geeks. Btw you guys talking about vader and voldemort (which btw silverhopes you're line about faith was awesome) reminded me of the big bang theory *spoiler if you plan to watch this show* where the girls start reading comics and end up arguing about Thor's hammer and picking it up....I wanted to join in that argument. I'm a little bit of a comic book geek on top on everything else.

Mmm comics. Wish I had more growing up (I had Elektra), so I think son will give me the proper excuse to grow my collection. What's your favorite comic, Unagie?

Oh, that lack of faith line! I love that line; it was the line in "Star Wars" that first told me that Darth Vader was a bad@$$!

I'm not debating that Vader would beat Voldemort, but it's "horcruxes", unless they spell it differently in the Canadian version.

Also, how do you KNOW they're planet bound?

Are you meaning to say that the Room of Requirement would vanish with the diadem horcrux into a magical dimension and possibly avoid imminent demise from Vader's Death Star?

Well, if all else failed, Darth Vader could just hack off his head with his lightsaber! Plus if all the Death Eaters were destroyed in the planet-exploding, there would be no one to cast the regeneration spell.

Now wait, am I being a geek or a dork right now? Or just silly?

I stopped reading when I went to University. Be happy I did not spell it whorecruxes.

We know they are planet bound because Harry Potter managed to find them all on the planet.

Amazonia - That has to be the sweetest deal I've ever heard of! I'm completely at a loss as to how anyone could pass that up, and my tactic would just to be to slap hm up side the head and say "Are you stupid or something? No? Then get your ass over there and enjoy some cookies before someone smarter than you does!"

On a side note, i've never met a girl into comics before, I thought that was just a mythical creature

According to him cookies aren't benefit enough.

Seriously, enjoy Doctor Who. That show has a very special place in my heart, because I started watching it during post-DDay insomnia. I watched the whole series through a few times in a row (several episodes a day) and then became obsessed. You start to notice other Whovians around you once you're hooked, and wonder how you ever missed all the references and jokes.

Oh no, there's a lot of us out there!

Recently got some of the old Batman ones. My mom gifted me one that she's been holding onto for ages (she gave me the Elektra ones too as a kid). Comics rule!!!!

He could just force lift the wand from voldemort and load it into his lightsaber then bzzzzzp it.

as for horcruxes, whats her name is apparently amazing when it comes to lifting very, very old ideas and renaming them. The idea of phylacteries, where a powerful entity stores part of its life essence in a mundane object separate from itself so as to achieve some kind of immortality has been around forever. Though I think the word phylactery is purely D&D. Anyway, voldemort violated rule #5 of the Evil Overlord's Top 100:

"The artifact which is the source of my power will not be kept on the Mountain of Despair beyond the River of Fire guarded by the Dragons of Eternity. It will be in my safe-deposit box. The same applies to the object which is my one weakness."

http://www.eviloverlord.com/lists/overlord.html < source

eta:

22 is really my favorite:

"No matter how tempted I am with the prospect of unlimited power, I will not consume any energy field bigger than my head."

Lord Vader sez: "All your whorecruxes are belong to me!" :evil-laugh:

Though it just wouldn't work if Vader wore the invisible cloak... Voldemort would still hear his breathing.

He probably would be able to force-lift the Elder Wand... unless Voldemort were very proficient in wandless magic, then he might prolong the fight a little ...still think Vader would win. He'd probably win faster if he knew the lightning trick.

Voldemort: "Ava-" ZZZZZ!

On the other hand, if Voldemort knew his weaknesses and promised Vader he could see his wife again via the Resurrection Stone, Vader might be hosed. But considering Voldemort's incompetence in understanding what love is (Lily's love for Harry and Snape's love for Lily being the immediate examples that come to mind), he probably wouldn't think of that.

I like #2 of the Evil Overlord List... Would totally ruin about half the gameplay in "Batman: Arkham Asylum" though.

Well if you think about Vader's apprentice Starkiller ripping a star destroyer out of orbit and throwing it at something as being less powerful then Vader then wandless magic is still kinda.. I dunno.

Hokey religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster anyway.

I wonder how they'd do against GladOS.

True. The Force pretty much IS wandless magic, without the incantations and dramatic poses.
