OK the text in the link is enough, I'm not going to open the story. Was the baby ok?

Also this:

“When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’ To this day, especially in times of ‘disaster,’ I remember my mother’s words, and I am always comforted by realizing that there are still so many helpers - so many caring people in this world.” — Mister Rogers

My H and I are involved with a charity that helps put child abusers in jail and helps train foster parents/place kids with foster families. I am in awe of these people. They are the helpers. It seems unfair that it's so hard to undo evil. It's so much harder to build up than to tear down. But there are so many more good people than bad. When I see these awful stories it puts a fire under me to work harder to support this cause.

I think the baby is okay, God, I hope so.

This is just so disturbing right on the heels of the baby in Georgia that was shot, it just breaks my heart.

Yes, Jana, you make a good point, and we have to believe there is more good than evil in the world.

I love what you and your H are doing to help. Did you know that I used to be a foster mom?

I was foster Mom to 2 infants (at different times). One was the neglected infant of a prostitute. The other child had been thrown against a wall at 5 months of age.

Then, I had a 7 yr old for a while whose father had attempted to murder his mother.

It's all just so sad.

I'm going to piggyback on what Jana is saying with this:

The world ISN'T "full of such monsters." The truth is that we are now a voracious human culture which is partly built around and supported by a 24-hour news cycle. These events can be broadcast in several different media and pointed out, where they might have simply gone under the radar or been local news before.

As such, we as a culture are being exposed to more and more of these stories, and for those people who already have enough trouble reconciling reality with what they see on television, it just makes things worse. When I took my broadcasting courses in college, I heard it referred to as "Scary World Syndrome," and the people who are most likely to succumb to it are the ones who weren't raised in a time of extensive mass media coverage of such things.

Jana is absolutely correct in that there are far more "helpers" than perpetrators. It's just that news outlets feel like the perps get more ratings than the "feel good" "helper" stories. Which are people more likely to watch: the horrific aftermath of an execution-like mass murder spree, or people spooning up soup at the local homeless shelter?

The public encourages such spectacles to be public knowledge by their 'vote,' which in this case is readership/listenership/viewership. As long as the masses are entertained by violence, there will always be a media waiting in the wings to cover it.

That said, this article doesn't even begin to undertake the REAL problem: why? We know that it happened, but we may never have a suitable solution to "why?" Why pistol-whip the kid? I understand the cash grab, but what purpose did the baby serve? We will probably never understand to a satisfactory level, and it won't be news-worthy when we do, because we will have moved on to the next person who did something even more ludicrous.

It's terrible what happens to these kids. And it's amazing that there are people like you willing to step up and help them. I'm sure those kids will remember your kindness. ((HUGS))

I cannot understand what would inspire someone to do these things to children. It's unreal.

I do want to share something that I learned recently, at an event I attended.

One of the speakers was from the Family Crimes Unit of our local police department. He talked to us about a recent conviction of a child rapist in our community. Basically what happened was a 12-year-old boy came forward and told someone about this man who had assaulted him. In the course of the investigation there were several other victims and potential victims revealed. The police sat him (the rapist) down with a bunch of files, each representing a child he was accused of assaulting. He went through the folders and said this one I did, this one I didn't, etc. etc. And he asked the police if they knew why he raped some of the kids, and some he did not. He said, "I knew these kids (stack of kids he denied assaulting) knew they had someone they could tell. These kids (the other stack) knew that nobody would believe them, there was nobody they could tell."

It stunned me for a few minutes. And I'm definitely going to make sure that my daughter always knows that she can tell me . . . or daddy . . . or any of her aunts/uncles/grandparents if somebody hurts her.

It's upsetting to think about and I apologize if I've upset anyone. It just . . . I was stunned that the difference for these kids in being attacked or not attacked hinged on whether or not they knew they had someone they could trust to tell. It underscored to me the importance of letting her know she can talk to us about anything and she WILL be believed.

It seems unfair that it's so hard to undo evil. It's so much harder to build up than to tear down. But there are so many more good people than bad.

When I think about how much effort it takes to build, and how little to destroy, and how much destruction we see on the news. I try to look around at all that still exists, all that has come into existence while I have been watching this destruction take place. I can take comfort in the knowledge that there must be so many more people doing good than evil.

My city was, not too long ago, known as the "Arson Capital of Canada". It was happening so regularly that firefighters were having a hard time keeping up, there was talk of a big hiring binge to blow the budgets, and even made it into discussions in parliament, with suggestions like deploying the army to fight fires, or using the water bombers on house fires (because nothing says we care like dropping 9 tons of water from an aircraft). Then suddenly it stopped. Turns out that a smart or lucky cop nailed the two arsonists on a parole violation or something, and investigation linked them to the rash of fires.

JanaGreen, even putting away one of these miscreants, however many are still out there, prevents so much devastation. Yer doin' good.

I don't believe in good or evil. I believe people are simply wired differently and some are more prone to violence than others. The sniper in the bell tower knew what he was doing was wrong, but he felt compelled to do it.
