P90X got too easy for me and I seemed to plateau a little. Although I miss Tony Horton.

I'm doing something by the same people who do P90X (no Tony Horton though ). It focuses more on strength training and no cardio. I don't need cardio with the job that I do and I'm really looking to build muscle. It's also a slightly shorter workout time.

I've been doing this new workout program for about 2 months and am liking the results.

I am just a lurker here but I have a question for ladies...

How or do you get thru the time about 2 weeks before your period where you want to eat everthing in sight.

I have asked the doctor, personal trainer, etc. Noone has answers for me.

Any advise?

Myname - sounds like it's a great program for you!

torn - I'm rarely successful at getting through those times unscathed, but the more water I drink, the less damage I'm able to do. The key is getting myself to put down the cheese and drink the water instead.

NIK, the water doesn't help me one bit during that time. I actually have to go on strict calorie restriction after to maintain my weight. Its terrible!

torn, it may not work for everyone but what helps me is eating more protein. If I don't get enough protein, I turn towards the not so healthy carbs. Once I start on the "bad" carbs (aka junk food), it just snowballs with me wanting to eat more and more. But when I consistently get enough protein throughout the month, I don't do the "eat everything in sight" thing.

Welcome, Myname!

Torn, I up my fat free milk 4 days beforehand. Also, I pay my DD $1 a week to remind me about my eating, cholesterol level, etc... I drink 96-128 ounces of water daily (not including tea).

Iconnu/jo2, I think we crossed posted.

I drink tons of water all day, that has not helped. Perhaps the milk and protein will.

It really is a curse! I just got injured in at work and before that an fender bender where I had neck problems. The doctor said no exercise for 8 weeks.

I have gained 20 lbs!! I can't maintain or lose my weight without exercise/weight lifting. I am a ball of flab now.

Then..... I just got back into my gym routine and I fall at work yesterday, hurting my ankle.

What next?

Torn - I totally understand. When I hit my 40s, everything that used to work for me stopped working. And things just tumbled downhill from there. Hormonal changes and stress levels, not to mention thyroid issues were behind most of my issues (which I'm still trying to sort out, by the way). It is so very frustrating.

While your ankle is healing, are there non-weight bearing exercises you can still do?

I gained some fat from not exercising and going off my diet July 4th weekend (SO was in town).

I've been cutting calories all last week and will have to for the next few weeks.

I did all the workouts I wanted to last week. I traded a leg workout for a P90X cardio which I may do again this week to try and burn some more calories and lose this fat.

Good job Jo2Love! Keep it up. That is great to use the g2g as motivation. I will be seeing SO in 5 weeks, so that has been my motivation to get rid of this extra body fat. My goal is to get down under 6% body fat and gain a few pounds of muscle in the process. I'm at 7% body fat right now.

Maybe I can get some help here...I have plateaued big time. My doctor just throws her hands up and says that I probably won't be able to lose these pesky 5 lbs. Do you think she is right?

I am 5' 113.5, not overweight but I prefer and feel more comfortable at 108-109. I was comfortably there before the deluge of d-days.

I have been on a calorie counting diet, between 1000-1400 calories a day for 6 weeks, eating healthy, lots of fruit, high quality protein, and I've upped my exercise and varied it. I have lost a miserable 2 oz. No health issues that haven't been addressed, as I do have hyperthyroidism that is treated appropriately.

Any suggestions?

BTW, I'm 59, healthy, but my doctor says it's just a function of age...

ScardyKat,

I just checked your BMR based on the info you posted. Your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR); the number of calories you'd burn if you stayed in bed all day.

Your's is 1150 calories. So with the exercise you are doing eating 1000 to 1400 calories is fine I think, possibly on the low side of things.

I would look at how those calories are being broken down. I use Myfitnesspal app and it breaks down the calories into percentages of fats, carbs, and proteins.

I do 50% protein, 30% carbs, and 20% fats. It's worked well for me but to get that last bit of fat off I had to get my sugar intake in check.

Carbs are converted to sugar which is used for energy. The excess sugar that is not used up in energy gets stored as fat reserves. So if your fats, proteins, and carbs are all in check the sugar may be the culprit for those last few pounds.

This part is a bit of my own theory so take it for what it is worth, which may not be much but I try to spread my carbs out throughout the day. I also load up on carbs right before a workout and if I'm really tired more carbs after my workout.

Another thought, is it possible that you've gained muscle and that is why you are weighing more?

For anyone interested the BMR calculator is here: http://www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculator/

ETA: I assume that the exercise that you are doing is cardio as opposed to weight lifting.

Thanks. I use sparkpeople which also gives me a good idea of my nutritional breakdown, but no, no extra muscle, I wish!
Interesting about my calories staying in bed...and I have find if I'm below 1000 calories I DONT lose weight at all.
I do cardio daily and yoga 3x a week...I'll keep on plugging, none on this can hurt, frustrating as it is...

I think the BMR calculation is really just a guide to give you an idea of a starting point. Mine is 1500 calories yet I eat between 2500 and 3500 calories a day depending on if I worked or not (I'm a landscaper). I find it hard to believe I burn that many calories at work.

Keep going with the exercising.

I did not feel like exercising one bit tonight. I pulled up Holding out for a Hero by Bonnie Tyler on youtube. Love that song. I don't really need a hero, but the beat of the music pushes me.
