Hmmm,I made the mistake of making that erroneous correlation too, and chopped off all my hair aged 48. But then I was also carrying all the woes of my world and others.

Now, having cast off those woes and taking less responsibility for others', I am growing my hair long again. I like the versatility and choice of many different styles.

And according to DH I got seriously eyed up by a group of young surfing dudes the other day (not something I ever see!), so maybe the long hair not so ageing after all.

This is me age 35 with very short hair (ignore the rotten little kid I'm restraining )

This is me age 58 with long hair-I don't think it's aging...

People should wear their hair however they like it and feel good about it.

Women are really in a no win situation. Wear your hair "too long" and people will say you're too old or whatever. But wear your hair really short (like me) and they say that it looks like a man/dyke/not feminine.

Since you cannot possibly hope to please everyone go ahead and please yourself.

Sad - that restraint picture is cracking me up but good. The look on his face is priceless. As for you - gorgeous at every age.

I think the key to women's hair is finding a style that suits you and your hair type, and the amount of effort you're willing to put into it. A good cut makes all the difference, especially for long hair.

ps. just saw the post about the hair color. I say, embrace your inner redhead. I did, at age 45.

I do think it has more to do with hair condition than your age. But that goes for any age. We all knew girls whose hair was so thin that it looked better shorter. Sometimes that's just the hand the person was dealt.

There's a woman where I work who has to be in her early 60s but she has this massive cascade of waist-length red-gold hair, not poofed or teased, just so thick and gorgeous. It'd be a crime if she'd thought she just had to do away with all of that simply because of her age.

In my 20s I was rocking the waist-length cascade myself, but these days I can't pull off anything more than 3 inches or so past my shoulders. Just starts to look raggedy. Your hair looks quite shiny, I think you're probably good for whatever length you want.

It nagged him, in particular, that none of the girls he’d known so far had given him a sense of unalloyed triumph.

Add me to the list of women over 40 with long hair. I didn't know there was anything about long hair on plus 40 women. All my friends have hair past their shoulders.

Oh as for red hair, it is the only natural color that doesn't turn grey.

When my hair is longer it tends to draw attention to my now drooping jawline. That's my opinion about me. I say wear it anyway you want!

Well, geez, I'm 35. My hair is starting to streak white. I've never dyed it. It's thick and curly. I do splurge on conditioning the hell out of it. I'm lazy...throw it in a braid, ponytail or half ponytail. And unless it thins dramatically and goes stringy on me, I will continue to do this until the day I die.
Although, I've recently tossed around whether I should get some bangs...but then I remind myself that I'm incredibly lazy with hair and don't have the patience to deal with getting them to lay right.
Many people have commented on what I could do with it, but in the end, I'm lazy and throwing it back in a pony tail suits me.

Well, if there is rule about older women having long hair, I am breaking it. Early graying runs in my family, so I was pretty gray in my 30s.

Let it go natural about 15 years ago and quite happy with it. Although I did get a little bored with it, so I put purple streaks in it....

I had super short hair for most of my adult life. It was light brown with some grey. Very plain.

In 2008 I colored it red. I loved it and immediately, I started getting compliments. Everyone loved it and strangers thought it was natural.

When I moved in 2010, I couldn't find anyone in my area that cut it to my liking. I got frustrated and decided, to he'll with it, I'll just stop cutting it. I also took over the coloring and started doing it myself. Clairol 6R. Beautiful, but fades quickly!

My hair is to my bra strap now. I'm 54.

Everyone tells me how much better I look with long hair.

It's a pain to take care of but I don't care really. My most thrilling moment was when I was able to French braid it. I'll post a picture tomorrow.

I think the women of a certain age can't wear long hair custom should go the way of mom jeans.

Absolutely!

I just don't look good with short hair. Seriously, I could show you pictures.

I will be 90 and still have long hair.

I think it is whatever you like and how you feel with it long or short.
I just whacked off all my hair into a cute sassy cut. I love it but I had long hair for years. I took the plunge and went for it.
But I will most likely grow it back out and I am 39. So by the time it is long again I will be 40 if I grow it back out. LOL.
So now I am looking more like Sharon Stone than Jennifer Aniston. I don't see it but have always been told I look like both of them and they look completely different. Oh with a Christie Brinkly smile. LOL>.....
How about I look like me!

My long red curly hair is my trademark. It's how people find me in crowds. I'm 46 and I intend to be like my great aunt, who at 94 had the longest, most beautiful gray hair I had ever seen.
As for color, I've never colored mine, but when it starts to gray, if it doesn't look good, the colors you like are the colors I will go for, deep burgundy red. (which is the color of my cousin's hair and she's nearing 60 and looks absolutely beautiful)

Mine is also almost to my bra strap and I'm 45... like cd, short hair is not a good look for me. My oldest girl banana didn't believe me until she "folded" my hair to see what it would look like short and made an "ew" face.

My view is it's your hair. Do whatever makes you happy with it. Who cares what anyone thinks?

PS: My hair is red on top and blonde underneath. I too am apparently breaking all the rules.

A woman after my own heart!

Most of my colored tips have faded or been cut out. I was thinking of letting them stay natural so I didn't look like I was in some sort of midlife crisis. Maybe this summer I will do it again.

DD drew a picture of me with colored ends, she wishes she could dye her hair like that (against school regs). I might have both of us get colorful this summer!

I've had both long and short hair all my life.
It is natural blonde (lots of grey now), and baby fine.
Two years ago I walked into First Choice and asked for an inch off my layered haircut. She butchered me....my H was shocked and so was I. But, hair grows.....thank goodness.
The first pic was less than a month after the chop.

Since then, I have lost over 55 lbs.
The second pic was two months ago in Negril, so it's an inch longer already.
I use a curling spray to keep it looking fuller.
My H likes it this way, though I do have to put it up in a pony tail at bed time. It gets in the way!

I just turned 62!
....and I like it this length.
