I can't take it.

I am sitting in my office with the door closed and the fan on, and I can still hear her. She has this loud, projecting "Gospel" voice and she has to make 14 syllables out of every freaking word she sings. Apparently, everybody else loves it.

I want to stab out my eardrums.

Get some earplugs! A much better solution than stabbing your eardrums... that might hurt!

Lol, that is my friend at work. He always sings (as we are leaving for the day) "gotta go, gooooottttta goooooo". I enjoy it, but he does sing quietly.

So Sorry you have to deal with that at work.
At least you don't live w/ a 13 year old who has lived her entire life in a musical. Singing starts as soon as she rolls out of bed, and ends when she falls asleep. Otherwise she is singing. She has a beautiful voice, but all day every day it too makes me consider stabbing my eardrums.

tushnush...is your 13 year old taking singing lessons? She is obviously passionate and you state she sings beautifully. I sing "reasonably" well, and wish I'd had an opportunity to explore that to see if it went anywhere.

HFSSC....I hate that too when every syllable is sung with a myriad of notes. "some" words, maybe "one of two" syllables, and ONLY when it works.

Thanks for the empathy, y'all.

I have to add...and this sounds so arrogant to me... but I sing well. I'm the music director at my church. I am asked to sing for events. I have been paid, nicely, for singing at weddings, funerals, etc. This woman's voice just grates on me. She embellishes so much that you can't distinguish the tune. And it's all songs that are unfamiliar to me, so I don't even have that to fall back on.

Oh well, if it's all I have to gripe about, life's not too bad.

Janet,

I have debated on putting her in lessons, but have not had to yet. She has been in Concert Choir all 3 years at middle school, and it is a fairly small school, the teacher is amazing, and has lots of time to work w/ the kids one on one. She has improved her range tremendously. She has the widest range of all the kids in choir, except for one boy that is going through puberty right now. So by freshman year, he will probably have a much narrower, lower range.

She wants to be a Vet, but her "back up plan" is to become a music teacher. She plays Trumpet, Trombone, and has taught herself piano, with a little help from mom, and is currently attempting to learn guitar on her own.

I am a serious "hobbiest" vocalist, and the prevailing wisdom on voice lessons is to wait until they are 16 or older.

I would also find a McCloskey voice technician for lessons. I am sold on their approach.

My DD14 is the same way. Creates her own lyrics to familiar tunes. This week, everything is from the Oklahoma! soundtrack. Last week it was Taylor Swift. Nothing like hearing her in her room, singing to the tune of "Love Story,"

Mom is so stupid
Yes she is really dumb
I really hate her
And I'm not the only one

*sigh*

Holy Cow, NIK! Maybe next week she can sing "I am SO Grounded" to the soundtrack of Les Miserables.

Thanks Cat, good advice.
NIK that is too funny. My D does that as well. And she sings Les Mis continuously. Much better than Hathaway.

HI HFSSC, it can't be as bad as MY singing. Once I was tyring to sing a song by Journey, and a deaf coworker turned off his hearing aids.

^^^^^^^^^^ ^^^^^^^^^^^^^

I am with you JKL. I love singing but apparently can't carry a tune. My family is always quick to point this out.

My husband was the lead singer in a band and DS17 lettered in Concert Choir in H.S. Guess that gene didn't come from me.

Once I was singing a song and I was asked who sings that song, and I answered, and the person replied "Lets keep it that way!"

I am sorry HFSSC, I hear often that bad singing is painful to listen to.

"Lets keep it that way!"
If I had a dollar for every time my son has said that to me...

I sing anyway.

You can always start howling. Or better, buy a CD of wolf calls and every time she start singing, crank that baby up!
