They are building one near my church.

There are several in Orlando.

most of the Starbuck's I have seen with a drive thru are stand alone businesses.

Hope they have one in a town near you.

Hugs,

K

All the starbucks here have a drivethrough! The women who work the early morning shift at mine are really funny, annoyingly perky and chatty and I think they enjoy stringing out the "hi how's your morning let's chat!!" convo before you can order. They know it tortures us! When DS was little on a roadtrip he stuck a stick thing out the open window and scratched on the speaker and said, "Coooo----feeeeeee----" like someone dragging along on their belly in the dessert and that got a huge laugh from them. I'm tempted to do that in the mornings when they ask how I am.

Okay, a friend of a friend was a Starbucks manager, and they actually have in their manual as part of the Starbucks experience that each customer should receive x seconds of chit chat conversation.

As a former franchisee of another brand, I used to try to train my staff to hide delays in drive thru by talking to customers, since waiting in silence for your food is one of the longest and lonliest few minutes in life. It wasn`t in the manual, but customers seemed to accept slower times if they were talking to someone.

I work in a restaurant, and I definitely try to conduct semi-meaningful conversations with my guests...not the same as fast food, I know. Feeling like you *kind of* know the person a little bit makes it easier to keep them entertained while they wait for their food, and also it makes (in my experience) them more likely to tip well. I always try to be myself at my tables, and not some cookie-cutter 'nice' server as indicated in the training guides.

"Hi. How are you today?"

"Good thanks." I'll have a {Fill in food of choice}."

"Would you like a drink/dessert with that?"

"No thank you. That will be all."

I don't know who decided that courteous service was a good idea. That person should be tared and feathered!

Now if they could just get my order right!

Seriously??? Wow...

On occasions when that happens, I will usually give them an ice glare (or at least an icy voice) and say...

"Uh, I'm not done ordering, but if you don't want to sell anymore I can leave."

The chik fil a people kind of freak me out with their "how can I serve you?" and the creepy "it would be my pleasure!" when I ask them for ketchup. Makes me feel like I'm at some submissive S&M drive thru...

Or is that just me? :)

It really all depends on the metric of the month being pushed by some MBA unable to distinguish cause and effect. If the metric of the month is SOS (speed of service), everyone gets evaluated on the basis of what the drive thru timer says. It doesn't even matter if you can actually demonstrate that the timer algorithm is fundamentally flawed and may as well generate random numbers, that is the metric of the month. Since they have some metrics that show a correlation between stores with high sales and fast service, the assumption is that reducing service times automagically results in higher sales volume, and when this is the metric of the month, everybody is evaluated based on this. One of the easiest ways to reduce service times is to reduce the sales per customer. For the staff, who do not have a financial stake in the company, the min/max answer to an easier life with the least boss stress is to follow this plan, and that includes for the managers.

Outside of the marketing group, corporate types hated to talk to me because when they wanted to talk about their metrics (to reduce their own levels of boss stress), I would pull out my own metrics like chain wide customer satisfaction tracking, or my personal favorite "the cheese ratio" (which I developed to track subliminal upselling).

Whenever you run into a cashier that sounds like they are hopped up on speed and seem like they just want to rush you out, you can thank an MBA somewhere in the corporation, and some weak managers who succumb to and inflict "boss stress".

I'm the crabbiest person I know, but when I moved from NY to Tucson, I was thrilled at how pleasant the fast food people were.

I don't mind the nice one that take your oder and get you out of there fast.

The ones that get under my skin are the overly perky and go on and on or so it seems. Just let me order DANG. Then they repeat the order and have it wrong. Get to the window and it is wrong again. URRGGHHH.

But I guess it is better than pulling up and getting "can I help you, umm, okay, will that be it?

And I have had that before.
Ummm, going else where. Thanks.
