I just received notice (an email from my former HR admin) that I was overpaid almost a year ago. The back story:
I work for the Govt of Canada in the US. The office where I was employed closed last May (2012) due to the Deficit Reduction Action Plan (DRAP-what a name; but I digress). Now they are saying that due to an audit they've discovered that they paid me through June 15th when my last day was May 31st and they want me to get in touch about paying it back.
I will check my records when I get home; I was told I would receive a certain amount of severance; I wasn't supposed to be entitled to it because I was not employed by June 2010 (I started in September 2010) but they made an exception for those of use who were terminated because of the office closures.
I'm now working for Canada again; I was hired again in September 2012. I had to start all over again as far as salary level, vacation accrual, etc. (
Has anyone ever come up against this sort of thing? Do I have any recourse? I'm so pissed!
Also, wouldn't you think I'd get a formal letter from the government--in other words, the Embassy, as they are the ones who process the US payroll--rather than a casual email from the former HR admin? Ugh.
