Last night I watched the HBO movie followed by the news. I got up to brush my teeth and get ready for bed, and saw my alpha kitty, Princess, lying in the bathroom between the vanity and the toilet. I peeked into the corner and saw a snake! Princess kept trying to smack it with a paw, and the snake was getting really agitated (so was I!) Since it was so late, I couldn't call the neighbor's husband to come and get it out, so I had to figure out what to do (after running around going OMGOMGOMGOMG for a minute). I tell you, you just can't top a Swiffer floor mop for mashing a snake, although apparently you can't kill it with one either. It gave off a vile stench, which I guess was supposed to deter me (it didn't), but I just kept on mashing it until it was stunned enough so I could pick it up with one of those extended-reach grabber thingies for old broads like me and run for the back door to toss it out, whereupon it promptly slithered away. I gave Princess lots of treats for finding the snake for me, and then mopped the floor with the same Swiffer and a lavender-scented floor cleaner pad. I used to go into ALL of my rooms at night without turning on any lights, but I sure won't be doing THAT any more.

Good kitty!

That cat just got a lifetime of treats. Glad you are OK.

I'm sorry, but the poor snake!

If it gave off a foul scent it was probably a harmless garter snake.

I promise to surround myself with amazing souls and love them fiercely.

A snake in the house will not live. End of story.
I would have chopped it up in 50 pieces just to make sure it was dead. Yeah, I don't do snakes and they die but then I live in rattle snake country. I just lost a dog that was bit by a rattler.

No such thing, Sad.

You are very brave, wounded. Princess is very brave. However, the images I had running through my head of you and the swiffer were hilarious.

I had a rattler by the steps to the cellar last week. I saw it because I always look before I step down (it's a habit). Gave me a bit of a jolt of surprise. I tried to scoop it with a hoe into a garbage can so I could relocate it, but it got away and went under the cement slab that makes up the terrace. I tried hosing it out, but got a toad instead.

I live surrounded by habitat and stunning natural beauty. I could kill it but doubt it would make a dent in the population and only give me a false sense of security. Neighbor reported a mountain lion on my driveway, by my gate. The gate is below a brushy embankment and I have to get out of my car to open and close it.

Thugs in my neighborhood.

SisterMilkshake, I'm sure I looked like a lunatic, bashing the snake with a swiffer - BTW, I learned that trick from smooshing camel crickets. Such handy tips you learn living in the country! BTW, Sad, I was pretty sure it was a garter snake (even though it was almost 2 ft. long), but I had never seen a garter snake shake an upraised tail, so I didn't want to take any chances. Besides, my house only has one bathroom - and I was NOT going to share it!

I would have freaked. You are brave. I'm glad you and your kitty are ok. I'm sure the snake is telling the tale of the swiffer to his buddies.

It wouldn't matter how late at night it was, I would have been screaming my head off in the street until a neighbor came to help.

I was out by the pool with my eldest son when he was 3. He was sitting playing on the deck, and I look over and a humongous snake slithered RIGHT next to him. I freaked out, grabbed him, ran inside, and I didn't go back out there for over a year.

I would have been up all night sitting in bed with the light on huddled up holding the swifter. My God, I might have a nightmare tonight just from reading this!

And,

Of all the snake in the house stories I've heard, why are they always in the bathroom????

They don't come thru the toilet...do they? OMG. I can never poop again.

Either from there or the shower drain

Our neighbor had a black snake up in his attic, and chose a novel way to get rid of it. He took a handgun up with him loaded with snake shot. Well, the snake spooked him and he unloaded the gun. Shot the hell out of his attic, but he did kill the snake.

Poor snake. Go out looking for a bite to eat and go home with a beat down from a mop.

Very few snakes are venomous. Most of them are good for keeping rodent populations down.
