This may be a dumb question but....

When I got in my car this evening my car reeked of cigarette smoke. As if someone had been smoking in it There was no other cars parked close but that doesnt mean a car didnt just pull away. So lets just say a car had just pulled away minutes earlier. Lets just say that cars passenger was smoking cigarettes. Would it smell like cigarettes in my car? My windows were closed.

My car was unlocked which is the reason Im questioning this smell

That seems really bizarre. I'd be inclined to think someone had opened the door or been in my vehicle.

Thats what Im thinking. I thought I had locked the car, but am unsure. I cant mention who smokes (but you probably get the hint) which isthe reason I am going hmmm...

I was hoping I would be told it was normal for smoke from a car next to me would travel to my car

As a parent dealing with breathing issues with my DD, I actually brought up something similar as DD best friend parents smoke & last week Dad took BF & DD to a baseball game & DD friend was livid at her Dad for smoking outside the car ( with the windows closed) so I asked the pulmonary tech about it & she said the only way DD would be affected is if BF Dad opened the car or smoked in the car.

Seems someone was in your car or at least opened the door.. Not to get you bumped to general or scare you but have you checked the car to see if anyone maybe put something in it or for a VAR or something similar?

On the other hand, were YOU around anyone who was smoking before getting in the car? I know as a non smoker,. if I go out with a chain smoking good friend of mine, even tho she's not in my car, I 'feel' the car is reeking when I leave her...

When I lived the condo with a shared carport (two cars under one carport... right next to other carports of the same ilk... I had neighbors on both sides who smoked outside every night.

The smoked under the carports and near my car... never in my car.

Every time I started my car under there it sucked in the air around it and my car would smell like cigarette smoke. Eventually my car smelled like I smoked in it all the time (I don't smoke).

Is this possible for your car?

Thank you all.

Where I park is totally open air.

I was inside my office which is a no smoking zone.

I had a situation after I started driving the car agwin where I felt someone had been in the car. I had that feeling with the truck. I swore I had locked the door only to find it open.

I used to have four full sets of keys two years ago. Immediately one full set disappeared.

Not sure if all of this is just my imagination, me being forgetful or something that is going on.

Uh yeah, sully, stop gaslighting yourself. Someone has keys to your car and is smoking in it. Presumably to mess with you. Two guesses who it is, but it would probably only take one.

Can you get keys changed for a car? Sounds like there only needs to be one set of keys - yours.

I agree with Ama....the only logical answer is someone was IN your vehicle. I am very sensitive to cig smoke and I swear I can smell if many feet away if someone had/is smoking. If your windows were up, there shouldn't be any smoke smell in your vehicle.

I agree, work on getting a new set of keys and lock your vehicle.

Very strange indeed!

Did you turn on the AC in the car for the first time today? I have had my car for 10 years, and X smoked in it for the first 2 years (then he left). To this day, the car reeks of cigarettes the first time I turn on the AC when it has been off for a while. And yes, I have had the filters changed. Second hand smoke -- the gift that keeps on giving (to people who do not smoke!! )

The car was made without a/c I was very sick when wh bought the car and made me go with him to drive it home. I didnt find out about the a/c until it got hot and I asked my office mechanic how to turn on the a/c. The rest of the stuff...its always a possibility its a coincidence (smell) me being forgetful (unlocked car) but.....

Sully, it's not a coincidence.

Lets just say that cars passenger was smoking cigarettes. Would it smell like cigarettes in my car? My windows were closed.

Unless it was in an enclosed space with the window(s) down, no. It's unlikely enough smoke would get in and not get out with the same breeze to settle in for a solid reek. Try wiping the windshield with a little windex and a paper towel. If it comes back with even a little yellow then someone is undoubtedly smoking in there a bunch. The tar will build up and just be nasty. It will get everywhere but it's easiest to clean off the inside of the windshield.

Thank you StillG.

Ive been driving the car for something like 2 weeks no...or a bit longer.

Our paper towels are brown so I useused tp. No yellow. Just black.

I mentioned this in Gen, when I brought it up to wh last night there was at first a bit of silence. Again, there is always a possibility of a fluke...

I am now parking in either customer lot or in our lot. I was parking in the small public lot next to ours. No more.

You said your car was unlocked. It could have been anyone.

My advice? Lock your car at all times.

Get the car re-keyed. It's not hard or very expensive. The piece on mind will be worth the expense.
