My DS17 is a special needs kid. He's pretty high functioning, but struggles with a lot of things.

We got word yesterday that he was accepted for his first summer job! His high school has a program that teams with the state's social services program and local employers to give Spec Needs kids who are transitioning to adulthood an opportunity to work a real job and earn real money.

The process to get the job has been a great experience for him too. He had to go through the normal job hunting process (fill out forms, interview etc) in order to get the job.

Kiddo is so excited and I'm over the moon FOR him. He's already got a list of a few NASCAR-related items he's going to buy with his first paycheck.

Along with opening/contributing to a savings account?

Congratulations all around!!!

Thanks Sad!

Both of my kiddos have had a checking/savings account since they were mid teens. Neither have ever overdrawn their accounts and DS in particular puts the majority of his allowance and birthday funds into savings. We've tried to teach our kids healthy spending/savings habits, which is something I never got from my parents. (and boy do I have the mistakes from which they can learn!!!).

DS has always been a saver vs. a spender, except on rare occasions. He saves up and only buys an item (usually NASCAR related, lol) after months of deciding if he really wants it or not.

Thanks!
DS has been cracking me up the last couple of days. He'll walk up to his sister (who has never worked for pay - only volunteer positions) and offers to lend her money to go shopping...at insane interest rates, of course.
