Today while participating in a webinar for a new database, the instructor was explaining the importance of entering the salutation, "...because you don't know the sexual orientation of the client."

Then, listening to the weather channel, the reporter was talking about the fires in Colorado Springs; she said, "These houses are being engorged (by fire)" Really?

I solemnly swear that I am up to no good.

How can you leave this where you did?

Which are the straight salutations and which are the gay ones?

Your honor (unless that salutation is gay or something), I was in fear for my life as they had just threatened to axe me. I felt I had no choice but to protect myself.

I saw a news article today titled something like, "Low Wage Workers Fleeing The State of California".

Fleeing? Seriously, people? No matter how small the paycheck I've received, I've never run away from said paycheck screaming for my life.

Dumbifying, indeed!

This is too funny.

My XH is/was from the south. Gadsden, AL, actually. 30's/ 40's white guy. Not highly educated but a high earner. Did well in the military (AF).

NOTHING, and I mean NOTHING, annoyed me more than the 'ax' thing. I'm from the high plains. I mean, c'mon.

I used to place my hands gently on either side of his face, and try to teach him how to say 'ask'. I'd say, "The word is ask. Say aaaah, ssssss, kuh."

He'd say, "Aaaaaax". LOL! I mean, he was upset about it too, and was really trying. Several people had mentioned to him that it bothered them. Not just me. For some unknown reason he was actually UNABLE to say 'ask'.

I've not heard 'ax' since our D in '99, thank goodness.
(around here it's spelled 'ax' not 'axe').

'Engorge' rather than 'Engulf'? I'd give a pass on that one.

en·gorge (n-gôrj)
v. en·gorged, en·gorg·ing, en·gorg·es
v.tr.
1. To devour greedily.
2. To gorge; glut.

Then there is Philadelphia SCH disease, where every 'st' gets the addition of 'sh'

So the word "straight"

becomes

"shtraight"

and the word "strict"

is pronounced "schtrict"

You *know* who you are

For some unknown reason he was actually UNABLE to say 'ask'.

But I'll bet he could say "asskicker" so that boat don't float.

Oh, totally!

He could say the 'sss' words unless it had to do with
'ax'.

He was an idiot.

I had a hard time when I lived in SC and the old ladies I worked with always "axed me bout my chilren" or talked about doing something in "da skreet". I was so confused about "da skreet". Was I supposed to be keeping secrets?

Oh, I so get that!

I spent 3 horrible years in the People's Republic of NJ, and they constantly left out adverbs.

So funny

I thought my XW was the only person who said axe instead of ask. Is that a regional thing?

My pet peeve: nukular. Come on, if you're talking about something that could annihilate an entire city, at least pronounce it correctly. But I lose on this one. Apparently enough people couldn't pronounce it that "nukular" has become an officially accepted pronunciation.
