Before D-day I was a professional landscape designer and installer. Now I am a plumber/gasfitter working for the oil sands. It is the machine that is running the country right now.

h0peless, that's an awful lot of positions for a principal.

It's a really small school (80 students) and the staff consists of me and four awesome but extremely overworked teachers. Since I'm the boss, I feel it is my job to do the extra things that they would have to do if I didn't.

I am a lot of things:

-During the school year I am a SAHM/sub nurse/sub teacher.

-During the summer I am a camp nurse.

-I also have my own photography studio. I specialize in infant and child photography, but I have started to branch out into the commercial/business side of photography (images for businesses, for advertising purposes). I also do some landscape photography and will be introducing my store to market and sell the images in the near future

Software developer, currently developing speech recognition applications within the telecom industry. If you curse into our automated phone system and it causes an error, I am the guy that eventually hears the recording of your curses.

^^^ Dude!!! So does that I mean I lodge complaint with you?

WTF is up with my gas company's system!? I swear it has been invaded by aliens. I have to say, "Yes. Y-E-S. Yyyyeesss. YYYYEEEEESSSSS." like an idiot and it's still all, "I'm sorry, I'm having a hard time understanding you. Please try again."

Oh. And there is no "press 0" to opt out of the system.

*cough* Carry on.

Dude!!! So does that I mean I lodge complaint with you?

Absolutely!!

I have to say, "Yes. Y-E-S. Yyyyeesss. YYYYEEEEESSSSS." like an idiot and it's still all, "I'm sorry, I'm having a hard time understanding you. Please try again."

Ugh! That is a poorly tuned speech application. I could SO easily fix this if I had access to their code/systems. Usually this type of thing happens when there is an ambiguity in the speech recognition grammar. You might have better luck if you use another word for "yes", like "correct", since their system basically sucks.

Oh. And there is no "press 0" to opt out of the system.

In a lot of states, this is an FCC violation. Even if they don't have a spoken option to press "0", you should still be able to press "0", even if it isn't a part of the menu. If you speak to one of their managers and throw out the word "FCC", they might be more proactive about fixing their system. Just sayin'!

Anyway, carry on...

then no doubt you've heard my voice before.

Interesting jobs all.
I was a giftware, housewares and domestics/linens merchandiser for a national department store (picked out the stuff for the stores to sell).
Then I became a SAHM, with periodic bouts of fun, outside the home jobs for sanity's sake.

I work as a transit bus driver. I'd rather be an airline pilot, though.

Am considering a switch to the larger transit company in my area, because the starting pay is better than our top pay, and at some point I could drive the light rail train (and not interact with the public).

Hmmm, now that you mention changing my verbiage, maybe I need to actually dumb it down. This is Tennessee we're talking about. Maybe I'll have better luck with "Yep" "Shore" (sure) "Sure-nuff" and "Uh-huh".

Even if they don't have a spoken option to press "0", you should still be able to press "0", even if it isn't a part of the menu. If you speak to one of their managers and throw out the word "FCC", they might be more proactive about fixing their system. Just sayin'!
Totally going to log that away in my memory bank for next time. Thanks for the tip.

Once again, carry on all.

I have my Masters of Social Work and have a private counseling practice. I see mostly adults in individual therapy for anxiety and depression...But, yep, I do some marital therapy and I'm pretty good at it. Oh, the irony

My first job, at 13, was running a 40's era switchboard (think Ernestine or Radar. THAT kind of switchboard).

OMG, I did this on my first job too and totally loved it. The student working a job there and I totally fought over doing it! The rest of my job was b-o-r-i-n-g!!

Losferwords, on some systems I have had success by hitting 0 (zero) twice instead if once or speaking "agent" or "representative" into the voice recognition ones. But sometimes absolutely nothing works to outsmart the annoying cop-out to having a real person!
