For the past few days I have had intense lower back pain in my left side. It shoots from my lower back through the buttocks into my hip and down my thigh. I cannot sit without throbbing pain. If I shift the wrong way the pain is so intense I see stars. I feel like its going away then I shift the wrong way and its back loud and clear. This happened once before a few months ago after a spin class and lasted for 2 months then just went away. I was laying down in bed just now and my hip and thigh went numb. I had to shift 3 different ways before I felt blood flow back in. Should I get this checked? WTH is going on with my body?

Yes, get this checked out immediately. This could be a pinched nerve (the sciatica comes to mind), a pinched/slipped disc (way bad, way way bad), or a wonky S/I joint (I suffered from this for years).

Don't delay. Get help or you'll suffer for a very long time & possibly have permanent damage.

Yup, I have had that sort of thing. The pain eventually crept down my leg and followed a tendon in the arch of my foot. It was a pinched nerve. I did nothing about it for a long time, and now I need periodic adjustments from a chiropractor. Get it looked at soon.

Sounds like sciatica. I had something very similar a few years ago and it was made way worse by walking but did go away on it's own. I don't recommend waiting it out though. I just had gone on vacation and couldn't get to the doctor before I left. Warm baths and heat patches helped me.

I agree with sciatica.

When it's happening, there is NOTHING you can do to get comfortable. You can't sit, stand, lay down....it's just painful.

Good luck with your doc appointment, I hope they can give you something for the pain.

I have had 2 back surgeries and back issues for years.

Radiating pain through back/butt/leg = sciatica. Something is impinging the sciatic nerve.

Chiropractor is your best friend at this point!

This is my day job and the advice you've been given is sound.

It sounds like nerve irritation but other possibilities exist. If it doesn't stay numb all the time it is unlikely to need drastic measures (i.e. nerve irritation vs. nerve damage).

I would recommend staying with conservative treatment measures first. NSAIDs or oral steroids if they aren't contraindicated, PT, home exercise and finally imaging (MRI offers most information) if pain persists for a few weeks and doesn't improve with the previously mentioned measures.

I agree that you need to be examined as that will direct workup and treatment.

Good luck.

sounds like sciatica, or SI joint issues, being that you had an episode after a spin class.
Any injury requires
R-rest
I-Ice
C-Compression
E-elevation

I would strongly recommend Ice, and cold baths, to shrink the inflammation, and allow things to go back to where they belong. Heat may make it feel better, but does nothing to promote healing. NSAIDS, motrin/Aleve are favorities. Take around the clock, and dont' stop when you feel like you are getting better, when the pain is gone, continue for at least 4 more days.
Lastly I would visit a Chiropracter, yes I know I used to cringe at this. But honestly these guys know what they are doing. My sister had her SI joint out of wack due to running, and she went for a while and got back into alignment, and changed her shoes, yes he watched her jog, and saw the issue immediately, and she has not had an issue sense.
I was to the point of needing injections or surgery on my neck I went, and lo and behold therapy, adjustments, and massage corrected it. NO surgery, NO injections, and that was 5 years ago.!!!
