Of course it happens on a record setting day at 109! It's a cool 76 this morning.

How's everyone else holding up?

AC is not borken, but we are broke, so our AC is set at 74 or 75 most of the time, more to take the edge off then keep us cool.

Everyone but the dogs are handling it much better then I thought that they would, but its cut our bill by about 20 bucks a month or more depending on how cool the nights get. Between shorts to sleep in and some fan action....we are good.

Though....here it only got up to abotu 85 th other day so.......no death valley here.

I keep mine at 78 or 80; I guess it's all relative after living in the desert for 22 years.

I keep mine set to 82 when I'm home and 85 when I'm away.

My AC has been turned off for the last couple of days because the highs have only been in the mid to high 80's.

This is the first summer with central air. I have had one ancient window AC in the past, so I'm loving life right now.

Our is set to around 78. Sometimes me or the hubs will lower it to 75 or so but really don't go below that.

We have a window AC, but the only window it fits is upstairs so we have a chain of fans sending the air downstairs.

Only works when the power's ON, though.

Now I know why you're broke!

We live in the middle of Florida and ours is never below 80° even on the hottest of days.

Even in the dead heat of summer our electric bill isn't over $100.

Tried replacing the capacitor to no avail. It's almost up to 87 in the house.

We usually keep it around 74. It's been pretty muggy too.

Just bought two fans. One doesn't work. Have to go out and get another one.

My hydro bill is insane. I finally took a look a good look at it and I am paying 260 a month . Maybe not high to some people but it was a shocker to me. So as a result I am being way more proactive about turning things off, conserving power and yes..not turing on the AC
It's not bad today but the temp is creeping up in here and I'm holding out. I'll run it for an hour tonight to cool things off before bed but unless it's really hot out we'll live.
It's only about 78 today. It just gets hot at the end of the day around dinner time. Of course we are on "Smart Meters" so that means that our hydro rates double or triple at certain times of the day and I'd rather melt than keep paying out the nose for hydro

What you need is a system like they have in some large buildings. When the power is cheap they cool, and make large quantities of ice, then when the power rates go up they just use the melting ice for cooling.

Mine died last week....along with my breaker panel. As of today and $6300.00 later, it's fixed. Couldn't stay home in the heat, so we stayed at my bff's house. Thank goodness for good friends

Its not the heat really, but the humidity.

Its horrible here in IN and so the cool air really helps out with that 'wet' feeling even on the inside of the house.

Honestly, if we didnt have two Great Danes, I would have it higher, probably 76-78, but they pant so much as it is even with the fans on them.

Funny story about this (not sure if i have told it before or not)

So it was winter here in IN...and probably oh...25 degrees outside.

DH and I are driving and see this pick up truck obviously with its windows down, and a bare arm chillin on the open window.

This guy was wareing a white tank top...both windows down, doing at least 50, and its 25 outside.

We get up to the truck and I look at the plates..

ALASKA!

After that, it was almost normal LOL...This guy was probably hotter then hell down here

I'm a geek, and I'm here to help:

http://lifehacker.com/181510/make-your-own-air-conditioner

We live in a place where three months of 105-degree heat is normal. Our thermostat is always set at 77. The kids' rooms upstairs are frigid, and our master bedroom downstairs is an oven (it sticks out of the back of the house, and the radiant barrier in the roof doesn't seem to do diddly). We put an overhead fan in the master bedroom and turn that on low at night. It has been a lifesaver. It's a standard setup in homes down here. When I mentioned it to my mom, who lives in a moderate climate but is frugal, she installed one and hasn't stopped raving about it since.
