Xtc - 'That's Really Super, Supergirl'

I can't hold you down
If you want to fly
Can't you see I'm all broke up inside
Well just you use your two X Ray eyes

Hurt like Kryptonite
Put me on my knees
Now that I've found out just what you're doing
With your secret identities

That's really super Supergirl
How you saved yourself in seconds flat
And your friends are going to say
That's really super Supergirl

How you're changing all the world's weather
But you couldn't put us back together
Now I feel like I'm tethered deep
Inside your Fortress of Solitude
Don't mean to be rude
But I don't feel super
Supergirl

I won't call again
Even in a jam
Now I realize you could be on a mission
Saving some other man

That's really super Supergirl
How you stopped the universe from dying
But you're never going to stop me crying

And I feel like you're trying hard
To sweep me like dirt underneath your cape
Well I might be an ape
But I used to feel super
Supergirl

The only caveat I'll add to agreeing with you is that Superman stops Lex much of the time because Lex's endgame is to kill Superman at some point, and much of the other shenanigans is the shit that happens en route to that plan....Lex knows that if Superman didn't exist he'd be kingshit, but as it stands he can't stomach being a close second, and so his massive ego drives him to try to be rid of his rival instead of just, you know, doing good shit.

Hey man I not only agree but will expand on that thought. One of the newer incarnations of Lex Luthor has him coming from a home full of FOO issues - he suffered child abuse, poverty, that shit. So of course he is gonna see Superman as the unquestionable authority figure because Superman always says "No" and slaps Luthor around. Daddy issues there on top of everything else, so you have a mega genius, ambitious Bender in a suit of power armor shouting NO DAD, WHAT ABOUT YOU.

You're right though, his evil plans always go askew because they involve killing Superman. Anymore if Lex Luthor has an evil scheme it's like he's rigging an election by actually getting people to want to vote for him. His dastardly scheme would involve resurrecting the Detroit industrial and economic framework by using the former auto industry as a foundation for aerospace drydocking industries, in which he has a reasonable stake of course but OMFG SUPERMAN PUT KRYPTONITE LASERS ON THE SPACEJETS. It's like Superman triggers his Evil ADD.

I like those lyrics Mr. Kite. I was always a fan of Kryptonite by 3 Doors Down.

I took a walk around the world to
Ease my troubled mind
I left my body lying somewhere
In the sands of time
I watched the world float to the dark
Side of the moon
I feel there is nothing I can do, yeah

I watched the world float to the
Dark side of the moon
After all I knew it had to be something
To do with you
I really don't mind what happens now and then
As long as you'll be my friend at the end

If I go crazy then will you still
Call me Superman
If I'm alive and well, will you be
There holding my hand
I'll keep you by my side with
My superhuman might
Kryptonite

You called me strong, you called me weak
But still your secrets I will keep
You took for granted all the times I
Never let you down
You stumbled in and bumped your head, if
Not for me then you'd be dead
I picked you up and put you back
On solid ground

If I go crazy then will you still
Call me Superman
If I'm alive and well, will you be
There holding my hand
I'll keep you by my side with
My superhuman might
Kryptonite

Oh whoa whoa

If I go crazy then will you still
Call me Superman
If I'm alive and well, will you be
There holding my hand
I'll keep you by my side with
My superhuman might
Kryptonite

If I go crazy then will you still
Call me Superman
If I'm alive and well, will you be
There holding my hand
I'll keep you by my side with
My superhuman might
Kryptonite

<crawls out of lurk cave>

You guys make my day, daily.

R with my fWW has not been all roses, but it pushes inexorably forward, and mostly satisfactorily. Backstory in profile. I get tremendous resolve to stay a healthy course from this thread.

Peace to all. I'll be hoisting a Founders Devil Dancer to y'all in a few short hours.

Carry on.

Superman

So just happened to be flipping channels couple weeks ago and came across Superman Returns that terrible movie from a few years back. Now maybe I'm being a little sensitive here, but correct me if I'm wrong, not real knowledgeable on the whole superman lore. Its been so long can remember exactly how things work out in that one and didn't care to watch the whole thing again.

Wasn't Lois married, with a son in that movie. And wasn't Clark still hitting on her asking her out for drinks and the like?

You trying to break up a marriage superman? well then fuck you I say! Get'em Lex!

JUst wanted to add how much I appreciate this thread.

Today is DDAY + 18 months. 1 1/2 years of living this shit sammich.

The best things I have done are focus on my hobbies and myself and start seeing my IC. The problem is the apathy setting in, or is it acceptance? Not sure. But thanks guys.

It could be that apathy is the troubled birth of acceptance.
Don't worry about it being a problem. Instead just be it & keep moving.

Not only that but Rich White (her fiance, Perry White's son) flies back to rescue Superman from Lex Luthor.

He fucking rescues Superman.

But it's all good because they were in love first, and she only got engaged so people wouldn't think that was Superman's kid or anything. She could have just quoted Brodie from Mall Rats, that movie had been out for awhile before Superman Returned.

Brodie: It's impossible. Lois could never have Superman's baby. Do you think her fallopian tubes could handle his sperm? I guarantee he blows a load like a shotgun right through her back. What about her womb? Do you think it's strong enough to carry his child?

Apathy is the slow death of indifference, acceptance is saying fuck it and opening a beer (or if you don't do beer, picking up your guitar or heading out to the trails or yelling at trees or painting little people or whatever) to try and get the most from the rest of your day.

Congrats on making it to 18 months, slater. I'm less than 6 months out and have no answers for you, but apathy sounds like a nice upgrade to me right now.

I knew there was a reason I always wanted to see Batman throat punch Superman.
Is the red cape enough to assume Superman holds the rank of Ensign?
And where do I find a job app to be one of Lex's toadies?

***ETA Nice Mallrats ref by the way.

Okay since I shit talked Yoda last time and now Superman I need to contribute a positive.

Captain America.

Yes, Captain fucking America.

I understand he got injected with a magical serum that was destroyed by evil badguys the moment after he was confirmed to Now Be Super but unlike Superman, Cap had an established identity before he was injected with liquid awesome. He was a runty little loser that got his ass kicked on a regular basis and his only redeeming quality was that he got back up every time. He knew he was going to get jacked up by some Ork-browed thug but he kept his convictions and stated them loudly and took his ass kicking for it like a man. A small man but a man who just kept standing right the fuck back up.

Cap does not shove his ideals down throats or demand other people conform beyond the simple "Don't be a dick" rule. In a fantasy universe where people have magic hammers even Hulk gets groin strain from lifting, trans-planar giant pillbugs with rocket launchers for teats flying through wormholes and experimental plasma rifles are regular fare, he uses a handgun and a shield, talks to other people like they're actually people and gives the plasma rifles he takes from the bad guys to the army and says "LETS GO SHOOT BAD GUYS" because Cap is not some self absorbed asshole that thinks only through his cunning/charm/grace/magic penis extension can he save the world.

Even after he was injected with superjuice, what does Cap do in his downtime? Exercise and train. Do we ever see Superman do that? No, he plays fucking Battletoads up in Santa's Workshop when he decides to go emo Spiderman 3 style. Batman just dicks around with his supercomputer and buys shit on Amazon or something. At most he got a montage somewhere. I don't even know where Tony Stark finds the time to stay up to date on the nerd stuff he has his fingers in, much less *invent new shit every day* since he's out screwing everything in a glittery dress that's too drunk to scrabble to safety. Maybe it was after he got a fusion reactor for a heart and settled down, I dunno. Even in the new Avengers flick though, it opens with Cap in a gym. Not being awesome other than resignedly hanging up a new bag every time he punches a bag into the wall.

He fucks up too. He is human. He always cleaves to his ideals unless those ideals obviously cause harm or suffering, then it's a simple choice: Don't be a dick. In fact, Cap doesn't even seem to fucking like being a superhero. He looked happier as a solider, when the other soldiers weren't lol'ing at the tights. He started off by taking orders, and didn't give them until he was confident in what he was doing, and his confidence was honest, not some bullshit to look good in front of everybody.

Cap had to make his sacrifices too. He died saving the world, and then when he got dragged back he had to accept all the fucked up changes in the world around him. Everything familiar was gone, nobody was there for him to trust, he couldn't even feel cheated that the woman he was in love with less than a week before on his time had grown old and died loving some other dude, because it was what he went to his death wanting for her. The shit part for him there was getting dragged out of bed to go have more fucking adventures. Adventures to save and help people he can't connect with or identify with beyond holding on to his ideals and then grabbing a beer at the end of the day and saying "Fuck You, Red Skull" as he raises a pint.

Captain America is an unattainable fiction but if I am going to have an unattainable fiction to aspire to, I am going with hi,. Maybe Deadpool too. I don't want to be Spiderman I did that teen angst shit once without the super powers already, I dunno that I could do it again without seriously fucking with people.

There, I can rant about positive things too. I think that was positive.

Holy shit StillGoing...bravo!

I would have to agree. I prefer CA over most other superheroes.

If i may draw a slight parallel to tie it into this site I would say that may our WW's affairs be the super soldier serum we use to become the captain america's of our own lives.

StillGoing, you've earned a standing ovation bro. That should be archived in BM classics. We need things like that on here. There are enough full-time pissers and moaners like me on this thread.

As a frequent reader and sometimes poster on this thread, I am often stumbled (stunned + humbled) at the amount of work that goes on in here. This past week would be one of those times. A lot of new faces, emerging lurkers, and tough situations. Great work, guys.

Here's a Little Sumpin' Sumpin' for you:
