I live in a townhouse. I got a new neighbor a few months ago. They're from another country, not sure where.

Ever since they moved in I've been smelling this awful smell. At first it wasn't that bad. I could live with it. Thought it was just something they were cooking. The smell isn't constant but here lately it's making me sick. It smells like something extremely rotten. To the point that I don't want to be here.

My neighbor that is on the other side of this apartment came over today. She got so sick she went to the hospital. She started naming off some of the same symptoms we've been having...sick stomach, headaches, allergy symptoms, etc. So we are worried it's more than just nasty smelling food. We're actually worried they are cooking some drug up in there.

So we went to the manager today. Told her every thing going on. She said she could check it out but she's going to have to check our's out as well. Fine, neither of us care. Just want to make sure no one's cooking something other than food that might blow up the building.

I don't know, she just got really pissy. They're such great people(They are really nice) and she didn't think it was anything other than food. Hello, nice people cook meth all the freaking time. Has she not watched the news?

All I know is I can't keep dealing with this smell.

I think...therefore, I'm single.

It is what it is.

I would give your landlady one chance to find out what the odor is. Then I'd tell her to release me from the lease if she's not going to stop it. I live out in the country and I kept smelling something that was 'acidy' smelling, a chemical smell, coming from the house across the road. I called the county sheriff to have them check it out and they were indeed cooking meth. The traffic, one car after another, late at night, was a real red flag. They got busted and now they are moving. Where I live, wildfires can really get out of hand and I had no intention of letting this go on, risking life and property for those of us on the street.

I would think that would be a constant smell. It's something that crossed mine and my neighbor's mind though. It smells that bad.

I would give the landlady a chance to investigate, but if she can't get to the source or WON'T...then I'd call the police.

You just don't know what goes on at other people's houses....but when it affects YOUR home you have to do what you have to do.

Hey does the man have a shaved head and a goatee, and drive a bently? Just wondering if Walter White moved in. (Sorry breaking bad reference).

I too would be concerned about the state of the apartment since it smells rotten. Indian food has an awful smell to it, but that's from the curry. Asian foods can be bad at times too, but so bad that you can't stand to be at home? ? ? I would give the Manager a chance to check it out, if she comes up with nothing I would definitely call the police. It can be "health hazard" if there is something dead over there.
Sorry you are in such a stinky situation.

I was serious about the durians, BTW. They have been described as a combo of rotten flesh, poop and a 10-year-old hockey bag. They aren't allowed on airplanes for this reason. People say they taste delicious, but frankly, most westerners can't get past the horrible odour. Google them.

If the landlady won't help, I would definitely call the police. Better safe, then sorry.

And also . . .

Indian food has an awful smell to it, but that's from the curry. Asian foods can be bad at times too

As a person of Asian decent, I find this a tad offensive. You have a right to your opinion that Indian and Asian food (not even sure what constitutes "Asian" food) smells awful/bad, but to state it as fact is impolite.

FirstLoveGone...

People have the right to their opinion. No one stated anything as "fact" but you did selectively edit their sentence and then quoted it as if that was the actual sentence.

When using the quoting feature, please do so with the actual full sentence/statement.

Thank you.

We went to the manager yesterday morning. She was supposed to put a note on our doors that she was doing an inspection. She hasn't done it yet.

I'm sorry DS.

Here is the actual quote:

Indian food has an awful smell to it, but that's from the curry. Asian foods can be bad at times too, but so bad that you can't stand to be at home? ? ?

Not sure how I selectively edited it, aside from not quoting the final clause in the second sentence. I didn't think I needed it to point out my issue. I won't do that again.

And I did state that tushnurse had a right to her opinion.

I am sorry this thread has turned this way.

Could they be smoking a hookah? I had several neighbors who were doing this and it was foul. There was no smoke, just the smell.

t/j On the homepage, with SadinAz the last poster, my thought was AGAIN?? Didn't you just move?? end t/j

Is it possible that something did die, like a critter in the walls? One time I called the gas company because of a really strong negative odor in our house. He identified it as most likely a dead rodent in the walls. This odor would come and go and got worse before it got better. It was not constant.

I don't know that the odor would be in two town houses separated by another, but something else to consider?

I hope you get answers soon!

We used peppermint oil soaked onto a cotton ball to mask the odor. Not the cooking kind but the candle making kind. I don't know why it worked but it was what the gas line guy suggested.

What is a hookah?

Wish I knew what it is. Just know it's a rotten smell. So far the manager hasn't done anything.
