I have a new manager. He wants me to fill out a form with my career aspirations by Friday. Short term and longterm goals.

I don't have any. I don't want any. I like my job. I don't want to move up the food chain in my company to make more money and have more responsibility. I have plenty of both at this level. I have no desire to take on any sort of increasingly responsible role.

I contract a bit on the side. What I really want to do is get financially secure enough to contract full time and quit my corporate gig. that's my 3 year goal.

Anyone else feel like this? I feel like a lepper b/c I am perfectly content with my job and current status within our corporation. I am not ambitious in anyway about this.

In 5 or so years when DS is out of college, I will be overhauling my entire life and hopefully very little of it will have to do with my current industry.

How do I answer this? This guy seems to take this stuff very seriously. Its important to him. I just couldn't care much less *sigh*

Whats wrong with me?

What about putting that you want to excel at your currnet position, improve performance on current tasks, streamline current processes, etc.?

NOTHING is wrong with you.
Perhaps you need to show him the balanced circles of work, home, personal life? If that's not an option and he really wants you to write out some goals, you want them to be attainable, many companies base their wage increase at perfomance evaluation times on how you reach those goals.

I would set a short term goal for something describing the best way to do the job you have, with some performance markers. As far as long term goals go, I would be perfectly honest that you don't want to climb the ladder. State that you are no longer a kid, and that you find your job very stasifying at the present time, and wish to be the best at what you do.

Hope this helps....

Hexed, I had one manager like this, thankfully he's gone. I absolutely hated questions like that...wanted to smart off "Look you SOB my "goal" is just to get through the day without having a nervous breakdown! F0.

What FF said, just say anything so he has something in writing to show his boss.

This is killing me.

We just did our mid year reviews. That covers all those things like 'achievments', 'areas to improve' ect.

Its hard b/c I work remotely. I will see this guy once a year... maybe. I never actually met my last manager in person.

Tush nurse I'm copying and pasting that. Ama I'm adding some of that. He just wants specific goals. "i want to become and associate XXX" blah blah blah.

I don't want any of that. I like my little role in the company. If I wanted the type of positions he was talking about I wouldn't want them in a large company I would go find them in a smaller organization.

am Intereseted in exploring other positions in the company? Yes the same thing I'm doing now with a new manager! Am I interested in relocating? Yes! Too a ranch in the Big Horn Mountains.
