Today we say hello to a dear, old friend. Thank goodness football is back!!!

Seeing as how we had to go months without our favorite sport, one would think the NFL/NBC would have tossed us a solid and could have kicked it off better than having Ryan Seacrest herald it in, which when you think about it would be just about as bad as Elton John headlining at the 100th Anniversary of Harley Davidson. Hey, wait…that too actually happened. Go figure.

We opened with a barnburner alright, with Peyton and the Broncos seeking redemption at Mile High for last year’s playoffs sword to the heart. Peyton must have eaten a whole box of Wheaties along with some of his Papa John’s pizzas because the old guy with the broken neck managed to throw for seven touchdowns while going 27-42 with 462 yards. Then there was Wes Welker’s play. Tee-hee-hee, Mr. Brady. Given his short stature, it was hard for me not to want to call him Rudy throughout the game, and when he Keystone Kopped that punt, I just about choked on my Summer Shandy. Despite also dropping a pass, Welker rallied well and contributed to an awesome Broncos win. Dropped passes also hexed the Ravens, along with a blown non red flag call by Mr. Harbaugh that a seven year old would have done as well as injuries to Jacoby Jones and Michael Oher . That aside, it does look like the Broncos are for reelz, peeps, and I’ll try very hard to keep my excitement to a minimum. There’s plenty of room on the Broncos Party Bus, peeps. Come on along!

In what should have been a blowout, New England barely squeaked past the Bills who were hoisting their new rookie QB, E.J. Manuel, who went 18-of-27 for 150 yards and two touchdowns in his debut. I guess when you lose players to felony murder charges, injury (Gronk and now possibly Danny Amendola) and the missing aforementioned Wes Welker, things are going to get a wee bit tougher all around. Could this be the beginning of the end of the Patriot dynasty? And what the hell did Cutler do over the off-season? For the first time in like ever, he actually looked confident in the pocket, especially in the second half, and his numbers showed that, going 21-of-33 for 242 yards, 2 TDs, and, of course, the requisite at-least-one-in-a-game-Cutler-INT, but it was one and only one, by golly! Married life to a reality TV star seems to be working for the guy.

Given their 3 outta 4 wins in the preseason, like some of you, I thought the Browns against the Fins was a natural pick, despite their #28 power ranking under the #20 ranking of the Dolphins. After all, Tannehill is a Dolphin. Boy, he showed me. He showed all of us. And the Browns? Well, they did their usual rolling over and stuff. Looks like spot #32 is theirs for the taking this week. The Saints welcomed back Sean Peyton and buzzed the Falcons despite being down 10-0 in the first quarter (Commish was jumping for joy!). My joy didn’t last long, however, as the Saints defense – and Brees – finally clicked – and they were able to win by six.

Rookie QB Geno Smith made his NFL debut with the Jets and even though the final score was a mere one point difference, he showed a hell of a lot of poise for a 22 year old. Sure, he was helped mightily by a hit parade of miscues by the Bucs, including penalties for: false starts (too many to count), delay of game (two), helmet-to-helmet hits (also two) and the game costing late hit (just one but that’s all it takes) yet to his credit, he held his own and with that, the Jets won their opener. Sunday’s baseball final score of 16-7 is brought to you by the Titans and the Steelers, with the Titans bringing along their super-sized can of Whoop Ass on Big Ben. Dude done got sacked five times, and worst of all, it looks like the Steelers have lost center Maurkice Pouncey for the rest of the season with a knee injury. Looks like Ben may become the new spokesman for AFLAC. Worse than that (OK, maybe not worst), the Steelers lost their home opener for the first time in ten years.

Lamar Odom should pay attention to what can happen to an athlete after he dumps the Kardashian Klan, as Reggie MinusKim Bush proved the new scenery in Detroit to his liking collecting for the day 90 rushing yards on 21 carries, 101 receiving yards on four catches along with a TD, despite dropping a pass in the red zone on the opening drive. He was one crazy busy dude. I told y’all last year that Ponder is a liability. OK, he did have a TD, but his blah performance with a less than usual stellar output by AP (93 yards? Really?), sealed the Vikings fate. Despite their #32 power ranking for the opening week, the Raiders were thisclose to bumping off the Colts, losing by only three and almost carried to victory by Terrelle Pryor who went 19-of-29 for 217 yards, with one touchdown and two interceptions. Air efficiency wasn’t enough, as he also snagged 112 yards on 13 carries. Yes, I’m starting to have flashbacks to his years at OSU, thank you.

The Russell Wilson/Cam Newton showdown came down to a less than exciting 12-7 edge for the Seahawks, still, the game showed the complete mastery that’s become EX-BADGER Wilson going 25-of-33 for 320 yards and a touchdown. (I’ll try very hard to keep that WI tie enthusiasm to a minimum this year). Newton, on the other hand, continues to struggle from his sophomore slump. What’s up with that? Then there’s booger bear’s Chiefs. Wait…what? They held the Jaguars to a SAFETY??? Welcome to the Chiefs, Andy. Almost makes ya wanna twerk around or something. Wait. Actually not. With a nice cushion of 170-56 yards gained by halftime, the Chiefs owned this game from the beginning.

CONGRATS, BOOGER BEAR!!! Woo Hoo!

What a game in AZ! Bradford vs. Palmer, with both QB’s putting up impressive numbers: 27-of-38 for 299 yards, two touchdowns and an interception (returned for a defensive touchdown) for Bradford while Palmer went 26-of-40 for 327 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. Is there a happier NFL’er right now than Larry Fitzgerald? He and Palmer could make a match.com commercial their chemistry was so spot on. Then there’s chemistry of a whole other nature that being the “I hate you!” chemistry that Clay Matthews brought into Candlestick Park against the 49’ers, especially against Colin Kaepernick. Sheesh, if they show that play one more time. Meanwhile in Cheddarland, word on the street is that muffed call by the official was the game decider. No, it really was – not the outstanding play of the 49’ers defense and Kaepernick continuing his domination. Yeah, that’s the ticket – it was that one play (insert eye roll here) – oh wait, there’s an app for that!

Good thing it’s almost apple season in rural New York which means it’s almost turnover time. Now that’s the pool I should have started – pick the team with the highest number of turnovers and you win! If you had the Giants for six, you’da won. Sloppy, ugly and downright embarrassing at times best describes the debacle that was the Giants vs Cowboys. Do we really need to give Jerry Jones any more to gloat about? His $457 billion stadium isn’t enough? What’s truly amazing is that they only lost by five. Meanwhile Chip Kelly’s debut couldn’t have gone better against RG3 and Co., with 443 total yards along with 26 first downs as the Eagles outlasted the Redskins. Zing, zang, zung – move the ball, move the ball, move the ball! Oh, and nice rally, Houston. Way to ruin it for a new coach on the opposing team, despite being down by three touchdowns in the second half on the road while playing in a different time zone. It’s just super mean getting the Chargers and their fans all excited only to beat ‘em. Then again I guess that’s what happens when you score 24 unanswered points.

So, onto the tally for this week’s winners and shakers. We’ve got some new players that are looking like formidable opponents, so I suggest y’all really sharpen those pencils in the weeks going forward. BTW, my miserable showing this week is because I really don’t think the organizer and Commissioner of a pool should come out of the gate all smokin’ hot. Yep. That’s my story, and I’m sticking to it.

In first place with 13/16 correct we have veteran JustmeVA!

Woo Hoo! Way to go, JustmeVA!!!

In second and third place respectively, we have MissesJai and newbie mike7 in with 12/16. In fourth with 11/16, is returning 2013-2013 Champion purplejacket4, while FacePunched, nowiknow23 and newbie Chico finished with 10/16 for fifth through seventh place, respectively. Rounding out the top ten (top eleven actually) we have lingerdog in eighth, sportsfan in ninth, Yme in tenth, and tesla in eleventh place with 9/16. A whole pack of folks – including newbie CharlieFoxtrot, and returning players ray-ray, kernel and booger bear coming in with 7/16 correct for twelfth through fifteenth, respectively. Yours Truly and scared&stronger rounded out the field with 5/16, but stand back ya’ll, we’re just warming up.

‘K…just a coupla Commish things:

• Please, please, PLEASE – check your picks carefully and make sure you have the correct number of picks given the week’s schedule. I hate to have folks miss points by not listing a team, and try as I might to watch the thread throughout the week to let you know, I may miss something.

• Check your PM’s, especially as we head into game days. When I catch errors, I PM folks. You will then be asked to make your pick, fix your error, etc., and then you need to update your posting to the thread to keep things on the up and up.

ETA - One last thing:

• For the tie-breaker, I just need your guess as to the total final score; not the individual scores of the two teams playing. Also, don’t forget to pick a team as the winner – we unfortunately had a couple of folks pick both teams this week. Practice safe picking!
