My brother qualified for the Boston Marathon last year but after the registration date. It obviously was a blessing in disguise because he wasn't there for the bombings. This year they have added more slots. Some for the people who didn't finish last year. To get into Boston you either have to be under a certain time in your age group or pay a lot of money for a bib and go as a charity. This year more people are registering and just paying the 5 grand not because they have trained and put the blood, sweat, and tears into it, but because they are jumping on the "I'm patriotic" bandwagon. This is pushing a lot of people with the qualifying times out. My brother finds out today if he has gotten in. Any SI mojo would be great! He has trained so hard. At one point he was over 300 pounds. Now he is about 175. At the 5K I just ran he handily kicked everyone's butt and had a pace of 6:22 a mile. I hope he has caught the unicorn!!

If he was 300 lbs and now is that close to getting into the Marathon, that man is already a winner.

And a blessed one, having avoided the race last year.

I can understand why they opened slots up for last years runners who didn't cross the line, that seems fair.

So, hopefully he is able to keep at it and run next year. His disappointment is understandable.

WOW! Boston! I could only dream of being good enough to run Boston! I wouldn't want to run it though unless I EARNED it..... just me. I'm a runner....but a 4:30 to 5 hour marathoner and nowhere close to the qualifying times for my age group. And, it sounds like he definitely has EARNED it and DESERVES it! I hope he gets in!

GOOD LUCK!

Shelly - He missed...by 17 seconds. He is pretty pissed off . His Facebook posts are sarcastic and bitter. But he has every right to be. The first year he tried he missed the qualifying time by 9 seconds. The second year he qualified 1:21 faster than the qualifying time...but after the registration date. Luckily this made him miss last year. This year because so many people want to do it now, they changed the qualifying time. His BQ 1:21 was historically way enough time to get him in. Because of the amount of people, they changed it to BQ 1:38.

He's running the Goofy (half marathon then a full marathon the next day) at Disney. I'm just happy my 5k is over so I don't have to run as much anymore!

Looks like he's in good company TCD:

38 SECONDS SHORT OF BOSTON

At the USAF Marathon recently, I attempted to quality for Boston for the first time in 10 years. I used 30 sec run/15 sec walk and was just ahead of pace when the 3 mile uphill started after 21 miles. I lost 2 minutes on this section and gave it all I had for the last 1.5 miles: 38 seconds too slow. I will try again!
