The one day a few years ago, I cut up some fruit for her and now, she practically knocks on the back door every morning

I met this family who had trained a wild racoon to knock on their door every night for dinner. Sure enough, while we were sitting in the living room, we heard tap, tap, tap and there he was looking at us through the screen door. It was the neatest thing to see.

While on vacation, GDM and my best friend's husband discussed at length building a potato cannon out of PVC pipe and fueled by White Rain hair spray. I am sure they would be happy to build you a mothball cannon.

DS - I believe you have handguns. You know you can get snake loads for them? It's like a mini shot gun shell. I wouldn't recommend using it in your attic though...

BTW - do you have any problem with rodents or amphibians? If not, then it looks like you might have a squatter pet...you can name him "OH MY GOD A SNAKE" or something like that.

Tred...I did see a rat up in the Crate Myrtle that happens to be RIGHT BY THE FOUNTAIN! OMG!! What if he ate that rat and now he thinks this is his home???

Keep the snake and get rid of the rats! They're really handy to have around, and hopefully he'll only come out to warm up at night and slither away somewhere out of the way during the day.

I don't know anything about snake natural ranges, so if you're too far west for racers, that's actually a good thing as the black rat snakes are more chill.

If he's out there when you look out the door next time, just thank him for his excellent extermination skills!

We have one. We just use starting fluid for the fuel. A potato could really scare a snake!

DS - When are the movers arriving? I'd come help you pack, but I don't like snakes OR rats.

No way to break this to you gently. He/she has taken up residence. Most snakes are territorial, and this one is lovin' your hospitality. Really, it's a good thing but if you're that afraid, you could have it removed. It might not survive, though, because it would be chased out of the next snake's territory.

I solemnly swear that I am up to no good.

Tred said they're not territorial...you say they are. Who's telling the truth!?!?

What am I going to do?? Now I'm scared!! What about Teddy and Kyle?? They know voice commands (along with hand commands) and they know "Leave it!" but what if it bites them? Kyle may be the cutest dog in the world...but he's not the smartest

They're not poisonous so the little nippers are going to be OK.

Snakes are good luck to have around the house.

And remember....you are bigger than it is and in the animal world that means the snake is afraid you will eat him/her for dinner.

Get in touch with your inner snake and everything will be fine.

They are not territorial in the sense that they try to follow the food supply. The territorial instinct is mainly due to either a mating instinct or a real good food supply. If it holed up in your barn with cool places to hide and an abundance of rats, it would probably hang there. Farmers actually love black snakes (the ones I know do). However, unless there is a great food supply and comfort in your fountain, I doubt it would take up permanent residence. A friend of ours has one as a pet.

I'm not fond of the snake loads either - I'd just snag him with gloves, put him in a pillow case, and release him away from the house. Our neighbor had one in his attic. He took a handgun up with snake loads. It surprised him and he unloaded 6 rounds into the ceiling of his bedroom from the attic. He did kill the snake.

Is MH afraid of snakes as well? These really are harmless, take a long pole, like the handle on a pool cleaner, and see if you can prod it out. As soon as it sees you it will head off in the other direction. Stat. Of course, you probably will too

MH isn't afraid of them. Here is a picture of our fountain...see why I'm so nervous now? It's like deluxe accommodations for a snake!!

I suppose if MH knocks some of those rocks around he may slither out ACK!!!! I swear to God, if he comes in the house I'll have a nervous breakdown!!
