User Topic: Fashion question: what shoes w/ dresses/skirts?

Due to a knee injury I haven't worn heels in years. I will never be able to wear the kind of high heels I love. I can tolerate up to 2" heels for short periods of time, but then my knee starts to ache and I'm crippled for a few days.

I don't know what kind of shoes to wear with dresses & skirts due to this issue, so I don't wear them anymore. This is a bummer for me. I don't have the body type to wear dresses & skirts w/ flats and look good or not look like a Hobbit or Old Woman Who Lived In A Shoe.

What kind of shoe options are out there that go with dresses & skirts and also won't leave me wishing for a wheelchair?

I love the look of flat-heeled ankle boots with skirts and dresses. I'm too old for it, but you could do it

Honestly, I think almost any body type can wear ballet slipper type shoes with skirts/dresses.

I think it has more to do with the length of the skirt/dress than the body type. If it hits right below the knee then you have your entire lower leg and foot to create 'length'. The shoes are cut pretty low towards the toes and I think they make most women wearing them look taller for some reason??

Having said that, I wear flats and heels probably about equal with skirts. I have several pairs of the above, but also some fun penny loafer styles in patterns/colors. I don't think the Hobbit would be wearing red patent leather or zebra stripe flats!

Good Luck,

Would you please clarify this comment? Why are you too old? How old is too old?

I think with a shorter skirt you could easily wear a flat - like right above the knee. Are wedge heels an option or are those also tough on your knees?

Some low heels I can handle, it's just when it gets towards 2" that I suffer.

I'm short and chubby and wear flats with dresses all the time. I don't particularly like them with short skirts, but, I like dresses enough to wear ballet flats anyway. I don't know what body type you have, but, you probably look better than you think.

I have 2 pairs of sandals and 2 pair of boots. The sandals are strappy and pretty and have about an inch wedge. The boots (I don't know what climate you are in, here we get seasons, you need sandals and fur lined boots) anyway, the boots are knee high, fur trim around the top, super comfy rubber wedge sole, and about a 2 inch wedge. And, then I have two pair of ballet flats. Those 6 pairs of shoes get worn almost nonstop, and I wear dresses almost exclusively. I have lots of really high heel stuff, but, those get worn very infrequently.

I'm tall, but practical. I almost always wear flats or something with a small wedge heel.

If I wear anything higher, my knees hurt.

I'm somewhat close to obsessed with ballet flats and think they look good with everything.

I wear a low heeled sandal most of the summer with skirts. I am a bit thick, and short waisted, so I get the hobbit feeling, however, it doesn't really look like that.

I can't wear ballet slipper style shoes that are so popular because they have no support, and my poor crippled nurses feet cant take that.

Look for Clarks that have a bit of a heel, but still are comfortable. I have several pairs of these, and they are cute, they make lots of Mule styles wich work well for winter.

Dankso makes some now too, now you will pay for these, but they will last you years, and years, and years, and your knee will thank you for them.

Why are you too old?

Look at my tagline; I'm almost 60

I have like 40 pairs of ballet flats. LOVE them. I'm short and not built like a model either. It's ALL about the length of the skirt!

I love dansko. So comfortable. They have some pretty dressy ones.

I was going to mention the brand Dansko too. Along with Aerosoles and Tayrn Rose all three brands make what I call "substantial" flats. Sometimes flats are just leather covering your feet, so if you have issues in heels, flats with no support aren't really much better.

But the flats from these brands offer foot support, use wedge heels, add a little extra height with a small platform etc. And I think you'll like how they look with skirts b/c they'll give you the effect of a heel (no feeling like a hobbit) but won't hurt your feel like heels and flats with no support.

t/j can I also put in a plug for Dansko clogs? I have several pairs, wear them almost exclusively as my "casual" shoe. They are awesome! Roomy flats, but give me almost 3 inches in height! Easy to walk in, look good with jeans or pants. These are seriously my favorite shoe. :)

Riding "type" boots are really in this fall and look great with longer skirts. They have a short heel and are great for walking.

I wear low wedges when my feet are tired but I need to dress up.

I just got some really comfy, cute ones from Payless, actually. Peep toe, shiny beige. About 2" (max) and I could wear them all day.

In addition to the great suggestions so far I would throw in flat sandals or dressier flip flops. It sounds crazy, but there are so many dressy options now in what was always the most casual shoe you could buy.

I get many compliments on mine. Now once the weather changes, and I'm in central Texas, so it's only a brief occurrence I move to wedges and boots.

Geoxx makes some great heels with Nike technology. Meaning - looks like heel/wears like a sneaker. I have had two knee surgeries and miss out on wearing beautiful high heels but there are some options out there. Check out Geoxx!

Country western is in and tbh I aaaaalllllwaaaaays have at least 1 pair of country western boots, whether true (was an endurance horseback rider for a bit) or faux/fashion statement. They're always a nice statement piece with a skirt and they are always in neutral colors!!
