I'm struggling to pick a topic for my persuasive paper. I don't want to pick the overdone topics like death penalty, abortion, immigration, gun control, etc. I want something interesting and, preferably, funny. Anyone have some suggestions?

I just had to do this for a continuing ed class I am taking. I am in HR and was told it could NOT be HR related. So I stopped and considered what I would take the time to respond to/discuss on FB or at a dinner party. I ended up doing a pursuasive agrument for Family Gathering Time (i.e. all sitting at the table over a meal each day, or a walk each night or Family game night every Thursday...)

Hmmmm.... interesting. Pretend you are the leader of a NGO and are making the pitch to a funding body (such as the Gates Foundation, ASAID, etc.)for your project. I could think of a hundred different projects that could be done both domestically and internationally. Check out what funding organizations are spending their money on. Then format your paper as a letter to the president of that organzition. Make it very convincing why YOUR project should be funded. I'll bet the professor will be pleasantly surprised by the approach.

Some serious things to think about:
*Water purification
*Textbooks for inner city schools
*Mosquito nets for people in malarial areas
*Drug and alcohol prevention programs for middle schoolers
*Anti-bullying program
*Theater/dance program for kids
*Exercise classes for senior citizens

Or you could go completely outside the box and make something up. Say, you are writing to the Federation of Planets Scholarly Fund to request money research the relationshipo between anti-gravity and the discontinuation of super-hold hair spray.

Or..... get your inspiration from the Nature Channel and request funding to study the mating habits of the south American tree frog in the aftermath of the Amazon Rain Forest reduction in size.

Ok... I'm going back to work. Good luck!

ETA: fix typo

I say pick something that appeals to you personally, like perhaps an environmental issue. What about something like government support for the arts--pro or con? Music and art taught in public schools.

What are you passionate about?

From looking at your signature, why not do a persuasive paper on how the internet or texting is detrimental/affecting/ruining grammar and spelling?

I'm passionate about books, Terry Goodkind specifically. Improper grammar and the overuse of cell phones irritate me. I thought about doing it on infidelity, but not sure what exactly I would say. "Don't cheat!" could probably be a great topic, but depressing. I refuse to go into politics at all. I hate winter/cold with a passion and thought about writing why summer/heat is better. My H suggested the title "Why everyone needs a Doobie"...our dog's name is Doobie and it could be interesting. I'm just indecisive and want to make sure I can have enough sources to make it good.

I would definitely say do it on how textese is ruining the literate world.

My children who are teens are not allowed to use textese with us, if they do we do not respond.

Another idea is academic dishonesty, the infidelity of the academic world again made much easier by the internet...also much easier to catch.

ETA to spell academic correctly.

Well, it's not a funny topic, but I would do an essay on why people should register to be organ donors. It was the subject of my very first public speaking project in college.

When I was in college (30 years ago) I did a persuasive speech on euthanasia. Classmates were to critique, and I was shocked to see so many of them thought, when I introduced my topic, that I would be speaking on YOUTH in ASIA.
