I'm sorry but why are you waiting? Have you tt any other parents?

The longer you wait the more you are impressing your son with the idea that it is not a big deal. This is aHUGE deal. Especially if it is public school !!!! Call tomorrow make a fool of yourself if you have to. If the school is just trying to demOnstrate what book bans are about then they need tobe aware that the kids areNOT getting it and think it is real, therefore not an effective teaching tool.

I think if they were really banned they would be simply removed, not put on a display with attention drawn to them with police tape. My vote is that this is not really book banning but a display about it. I am really curious if this is true!

Nothing like crime scene tape and the idea that they "shouldn't" read certain books to get those books LOTS of attention. I have a good deal of appreciation for this "ploy" and may replicate it in my classroom!!

Certainly is a good jumping off point for a great discussion on censorship.

TN, I don't know any other parents, so I haven't talked to anyone else.

I'm only waiting to talk to them because I'm already set to be at the school tomorrow and I want to see this shelf/display with my own eyes. I also feel that some conversations are best handled face-to-face and not over the phone. Plus if this is isn't a display then it's best to give me a few days to calm myself down so I can have a rational conversation and not go in half cocked with my copy of the constitution in hand.

I spoke to my son in great detail (poor kid ) about how banning books is wrong and how he should be allowed to make his own decisions. He also knows that I am going to talk to the school about this. I'm also trying to teach him that sometimes it's best to wait a few days to do something so you can go in with a clear and educated mind.

I'm so glad that I posted about it because I wasn't even aware that there was a "banned books week." This thread has helped me a great deal. Thank you to all who posted

Banned books week is celebrated the last week of September every year. We do a whole thing with it at my school-- we all wear t-shirts, put up a bulletin board of our department's favorite banned books, run TV commercials about them on the announcements, have a reading after school of banned books, etc.

Perhaps this is a holdover from that week? I'm not sure why they'd wait a whole month, and I'm also pretty sure that any book banned by a district can't be on the library shelves at school.

I'll be interested to hear what you find out!

No, I had to cancel. My mom fell so I went to help her. She has a big egg on her forehead. I'm calling the school tomorrow.
