I am in the unfortunate position of having to choose between a root canal and an implant.
I have had both before and am leaning towards the implant.
My dilenmma is this. when I had the first implant, I had a different dentist, and I liked the periodontist he referred me to for the implant.
When I mentioned this to my current dentist, he said he thought that the periodontist I used before was retired. He then reommended another one, one that my BH has been to.
I checked, and my previous periodontist is not retired.
Do they get referral fees or something? I thought it was a bit sleazy and I was really surprised.
I am not sure who to go to now.

I think you should go to whomever makes you most comfortable. If your periodontist is still working, then maybe go to him.
Sending you mojo and hope that it goes smoothly.

I have had a couple dentists tell me that root canals will eventually become implant cases anyway... which makes the "implant now" idea a little better.
I had both my lower rear molars root canal'd about 10ish years ago. One of them had to be pulled and prepped for an implant this year. One of them is fine.
I hope you get some info that helps you make whatever decision feels best for you.

I think I will go with the implant, but the reaction of my dentist troubles me.
Last year I had two teeth capped. They have both become unstuck, at different times, and the dentist charged me $170 each to stick them back on again.
I dont want to have to find another dentist but I am begining to feel ripped off.

I have a very professional crush on my periodontist. He's really, really good. I would go to the guy you like and have positive experience with.

I've got a root canal coming up on Thursday, which is going to end with a cap.
I also have two other caps, one that's two years old and one about five years old.
Neither of them have popped off. I know it can happen, but the fact that its happened to you twice in a year makes me think maybe your dentist is doing something wrong.
I would probably get a second opinion and start shopping around for a new dentist. Maybe the periodontist you like can recommend a good dentist. Ask him who he goes to!

Go to the guy you know and like, and ask him for a referral to a new dentist!
