If you are the one to leave the shared home, make sure you take copies of past tax returns (unless you have them stored by an accountant or on line--I did not.)

I've been asked by a background investigation company to provide a W-2 or pay stub from a company that I left more than 10 years ago! Technically, you don't have to keep tax returns more than 7 years, but in reality, I was a bit anal about finances, so I would have this--but it's 2500 miles away with the X.

I'm not sure how I'll resolve this; not even sure I'll have to--I've been in the job for a week now. But it's something I didn't think about when I separated.

I hear ya! I was removed from our home by the princess and we ran our business out of there. They only let me take a small bag and I am not allowed back in. It has been 7 months. I need all my personal and business records for taxes. We sent her numerous letters with no response ! Yes it sucks But it is what it is.

Sad, can you contact the company? And 10 years back? Wow! I had something similar but mine was the deed to my inherited property that asshat did not want to return. I took it anyway and he filed a police report stating that I broke into his home. I got lucky because there were no temp orders so the police would not do anything about it. So to all persons!! I would say make copies of everything and store it on a disk/jump drive etc. Also have a paper copy in case law enforcement questions you.

I gave the investigators a valid phone number for the company, but I'm guessing they said they had no record of my employment. I was sexually harrassed by one of the owners and fired, so I imagine they are covering their asses.

I'm not too worried about this; I'm already working in the position, and I've contacted HR to see if I need to pursue this.
