My younger son turned 15 on Tuesday.

And I gotta tell you, the kid is awesome. He has been through hell in the last 3 years. Absolute hell. He was just 12 when JM and I were S the 1st time. He told me later that he contemplated suicide the 2nd time we S.

But he is a strong, smart, sweet natured young man. 6 weeks ago he watched a 21 year old die in a horrible car accident. He's struggled to sleep, and also to keep up in school. He's in 3 honors classes as well as ROTC. And he missed all A/B honor roll by 1 POINT in his biology honors class.

That makes me proud. But the thing that brought tears to my eyes and made me realize what an amazing human being he is happened at church 2 weeks ago. I'm the worship leader and was leading the invitation hymn. We have an invitation at the end of every service, and people can just come to the altar to pray, or speak to the pastor. A friend of mine who is suffering from some serious medical problems came down and knelt. She was obviously very emotional, tears streaming down her face. And my boy got up, put his arm over her shoulders and knelt down beside her. In the midst of his pain and grief, he was able to see outside himself, and reach out to someone else.

Moments like that are heaven on earth to me.

Thanks, y'all.

You know, I sometimes have a hard time when I think about the time my addictions stole from my kids, and it's easy to get down on myself.

Moments like this help me to see that I did some stuff right along the way.

What a wonderful young man you are raising! You have every right to be proud of him! Compassion like your son exhibits is so rare, especially in a teenager.
