I work for a mental health agency. This came across my desk and I thought it might help some of us who have a difficult time during the holidays.

First, try to remember that Thanksgiving, even though Nationally celebrated, is really just a Thursday.

· It's possible that it will be filled with ups, downs, glitches and unexpected happenings. Some of them may even be good ones!

· Keep in mind that no matter how much you want it to be, not everything is going to be perfect - and does it really need to be? Who's really going to be traumatized if their napkin isn't folded into an origami Bonsai Tree?

· You can't control every detail: Do you think every dish is going to be delicious to every single person? Do you think that none of your buttons are going to get pushed? Do you think that the air will be filled with happiness and gratitude every single second of this fabulous day? You may want to think again.

· Sometimes family members or even friends can have a way of making your self-esteem suffer. We suggest writing down a few of your best qualities - qualities that make you proud of yourself - and have that list with you. If you start to feel insecure, excuse yourself and take a good look at your list. Remind yourself of who you are - not who they tend to make you feel like, but who you really are - and we bet you'll feel better. After all, it's hard to feel low about someone as great as you!

· Don't sweat the little things! If you have kids at your festivities, it's inevitable that something's going to get spilled or someone's going to fall down or get cranky or cry or break something. That's to be expected with kids. (sometimes with adults too!) Arm yourself with some extra patience and extra paper towels! Take a deep breath before responding and just remember that they're learning and doing the best they can. If you have the opportunity, try to make sure there are things available to occupy them and engage them. They'll appreciate having something to do!

· If you find yourself feeling overwhelmed, take a moment to yourself. (even if you have to excuse yourself to the bathroom to find a quiet place!) Sometimes it's helpful to visualize that it's the end of the day and that you've made it through! Visualize that you've enjoyed your day; enjoyed the company of the people you were with; that you've managed to get through any and all of the little hiccups that came along by practicing the advice you've read here. You might even want to try this visualization exercise before the day begins!

· Keep in mind that no matter what, the next day is Friday!
