I know this should be simple, but I'm drawing a blank on the second problem.

My son has to answer this math problem.

Which problem will have the greater quotient, 376.0 ÷ 93 or 376 ÷ 93.01. Explain how you know.

I showed him how to do the first problem, but I'm drawing a blank on the second one. It's been a while since 5th grade math

Since a quotient is an ANSWER in division, the first one will have a higher quotient. You don't have to solve the problems. You know that the first one will be higher because if you divide an number by one number (93) which is smaller than the other number (93.01) it will automatically give you a higher number.

Think of it this way. If you have a number, 20, and divide it by 10, or divide it by 2, which will give you the greater quotient?

I think this is right...I taught first grade forever. We never got to division!

The way your wrote the two problems the dividends are the same but the divisors are different.

So the quotient is the result of the division. So let's look at the divisors. One is larger than the other. Meaning that it is going to divide the dividend into more pieces. The more pieces you need the smaller they will be. Thus the quoitent of the first expression will be larger.

^^^ What ScaredyKat and MO said. I think it is this concept the homework is getting at.

If you are having trouble doing the math to prove it, you need to move the decimal points.

376/93.01 = 37600/9301

Your beliefs don’t make you a better person, your behavior does.

Thank you everyone! The decimal in 93.01 threw me off. I appreciate the help
