I wish I had an answer for you.

All I know though is that if I were the dog, and I knew that it was this or eternal sleep....I would rather got to eternal sleep with the person that has been caring for me for so long, then to a no kill shelter until they need room and i am sent away.

I want to give an update for everyone!

My dog is FINE! My son is FINE!

My son has a viral skin infection that can be treated w/ meds. My dog has nothing to do with his rash all over his body. I talked to the vet and he said my dog will have to be on cortizone for life but it seems that is all the he needs. He is "healthy" and in no pain, plus he is in charge of keeping our beds and our couches warm at all times Afghan Hounds I tell ya...

YAY!!

How did your son get a viral skin infection? I'm curious because I've never heard of that.

Yipeee!!!! I would ask the vet if the kids viral skin infection could be the se thing on the dog. Some stuff crosses species but not all.

I had a lhasa/poodle mutt that developed a grass allergy around age 13. She had a small daily dose of steroids and lived another 9 yes 9 years. She was blind deaf and toothless when her time ran out but always a character.

I'm so happy that your son's illness will be cured and your sweet doggie can live out his life with you. Great news!

tushnurse,
I would ask the vet if the kids viral skin infection could be the se thing on the dog.

I did but the vet doesn't think so. But then again Vet is not sure what allergies he has...

EW why dont you ask if the dog can be treated prophalactically tell him what med they gave your son, and see if it's safe for the dog, or if there is a K-9 equivalent.

One time treatment would be waaaaay easier than steroids forever.
