Checkin' in real quick, I got volunteered to host dinner tonight for my family. Since I am hosting, I only had to make dessert.

(I don't have a plate that fancy but mine looks almost as good.)

What do you call Hot Chocolate with Rum in it??

Grown Up Hot Chocolate?

I just realized this is the very first time in my life I'll be all alone on Christmas Eve Huh.

But I'm okay Had a really nice day making soap, and tomorrow I'll be having Christmas dinner with friends, so that'll be nice.

DS is coming to town from Jan 2-5 and will stay with me, so I'm really looking forward to that!

I could definitely use some more cookies. Does anyone remember a cookie recipe called Toffee Bars? They weren't really toffee at all. They're basically a layer of brown sugar dough with a chocolate bar melted on top. Best. Cookies. Ever. Even though they aren't really festive-looking. Anyway, since we're having virtual, no-calorie cookies, I'll have a whole platter of those!

my hot cocoa has bailey's in it, and real whipped cream on top.

I still have presents that need wrapping. I suspect they're not going to look as pretty as the ones I've already wrapped.

I left home yesterday.

My kids will have the presents, my WW will play house, be Santa with the kids (with the last gifts we bought together) and pretend nothing happened.

Me? I'm at an extended stay hotel. Went to the supermarket and I'm cooking up Microwaved Pad Thai noodles. That will be Christmas dinner.

Also, I got a bunch of Snacks. Right now I threw together Mangoes, Watermelon, orange, jicama, celery and carrots. Having them with lime and chili, to remind me of my childhood, when things were so much simpler (fruit+chili is big where I grew up). My kind of comfort food. Good for you, too.

Shunning alcohol today. Don't want to cry, don't want to get depressed. Next year I promise to get blasted drunk though.

Ok I'm back! Just had dinner with the kiddoes - chili, taquitoes, cheese sticks, chips and queso. The house is quiet now. Sitting by the fire with a Run and Diet Dr, Pepper.

Time to break into the Glitter cards. Good to see you Got Played. Have some virtual booze. It'll get you feeling good.

Merry Christmas everyone. Hope tonight is a magical night be it peaceful quiet or crazy getting ready to play Santa in a couple hours for the kiddoes.

Gotplayed and cayc,
I had this dish for the first time this year. I was surprised at first, having never heard of it, but it turned out to be something I liked.
Does it have an official name? The taco stand I got it from just called it fruit salad.

This is the translation:

Classic Powder

A delicious blend of 100% natural chilli first with lemon and salt, the perfect balance between taste and itching.

Thanks, tho, Cayc - it helps!

cayc,

Not in, from.

But it's also a California thing if you know where to look, or hang out with Americans of Hispanic descent.

That, or Northern California health nuts, who have discovered it (some more recently than others) and if they're smart they're all over it.

I am still waiting for the opportunity of finding good "esquites" (pronounced "Es - kee - tays", a corn snack in broth, with lime, chili and spices - if any of you are ever in a traditional Mexican downtown, look for it amongst the street and corn vendors - incredibly delicious, seriously).

gahurts, thanks for the drink. Virtually I'll definitely partake. Rum & Coke is perfect for me, and definitely a squeeze of lime.

The only alcohol I can't have (seriously, I think I'm allergic) is whiskey.

Vodka, Tequila, Rum are my three favorites, roughly in that order.

Cheers!

BrokenRoad,

I've heard it called
- Simply, "Fruta con chile"
- "Conos de Fruta" (because street vendors sometimes make a cone out of waxed paper in order to stick the fruit in it).
- Fruta con tajín - As cayc mentioned, it's the brand of spice. It's not the only brand there is, but that's the most common. Tajín is available in the vegetable section of any California supermarket (and I'm fairly sure also Arizona, Texas and New Mexico) or "Mi Pueblo" Mexican store (the biggest, fanciest Mexican-themed supermarket chain here in CA). Further east than the Soutwest, you can check the Hispanic section of the grocery store or go to a specialized store, it will definitely be there.

You can also get it at Amazon, with free shipping if you have Prime.

Otherwise it's very simple to make. It's really just "Piquin chili" dust, which you can find at your spice store and it's very similar, though not the same, as Cayenne (you could try Cayenne too, just watch the heat), mixed with a good amount of salt and lots of lime, which in Tajín the product's case it's dehydrated and it's right in the mix.

If you are making your own you just pour copious amounts of lime on the fruit, then sprinkle the chili/salt mix. As what you read on the Tajín's translation, make sure you strike a proper balance on a small portion first - it's easy to overdo or under-do. You can partially solve overdoing by pouring more lime to wash it off a bit. :-)

DD asleep, DS retired to his room for the evening, presents all under the tree, stockings filled, and Bailey's poured. Sigh.
