Love both, started with the show, got addicted, had to read the books. I absolutely love the actors on the show and Tyrion is astounding. I love how well rounded the characters are, no one is purely good or evil. You love/hate them all and some you lean more to one side than the other.

Well, I ended up watching the first 3 episodes on Monday night, very good! Although I hope Jon eventually stops standing around with his mouth hanging open looking dumb all the time! I can't wait for the last book; what's the word on when it will be finished?

the books are pretty good. ive not watched the series at all except a few episodes here and there.

if you like it, give the "wheel of time" series a try by robert jordan. imo its much superior.

I like the series. They do a decent job for the tv series. I am about 50% through the 5th book, but I just haven't been interested in reading the remainder, and not because the book is bad, I am determined to finish it by spring!

I saw a couple episodes of the show and was totally turned off. But i decided to give the books a shot.

I am about 150 pages or so into book one and it is ok. Less graphic sexually than the corresponding tv episodes.

There is incest, and a child bride (child to our modern way of thinking) and violence. So it is not for the squeamish.

I am reserving full judgement till I finish at least the first book.

I can't wait for the last book; what's the word on when it will be finished?

I read that book 6 is almost done, no release date but it will be done before season 6 of the show.
It takes him like 5 years to write one, so book 7 could be a long way off!!

I heard a rumor that he told the producers of the show what is going to happen, so that if he dies before finishing the books at least we'll be able to watch it!

I have now read books 1-3. i like them but.... seriously dude needs a better editor. Way too much extraneous stuff.

The story lines are good, and I like the characters and the plot twists- even though he kills off a lot of main characters...but I find myself skimming large sections that seem to have no particular point in the narrative. Dunno- maybe they come into play later but for now I think they are a bit too much.

I'm still on Book 3. He is very wordy. I agree about the extranneous (sp?) shit.

If he cut 10% of his word count, the books would probably drop at least 300 pages.

I'm trying not to get too attached to any of the characters. I absolutely loathe half of them, though.

Read all 5 books... The last book moved too slow for me. I wanted more resolutions but didn't happen. I also watch it on HBO. Looking forward to the new season next month.

Um yeah. So I'm almost done with Book 3.

WTF?????

I guess if you're going to be a fan of the series you can't get attached to ANYONE!

I love the ASOIAF books. I know many people don't care for all the extra characters and whatnot...but I find them interesting. To me, they flesh out aspects of the story I would not have otherwise thought of. It gets a little tricky to keep everyone straight, but once you've read the books 2 (or 3 ) times it all makes sense. Some of it even more so.

Reposting as I really enjoyed the books. We bought the first two sets of the series as we don't have tv....I think they did a good job, but still prefer reading the books.

I haven't seen anyone post the link for the chapter Martin has on his website from the next book. Fun to preview. I've pasted it here: http://www.georgerrmartin.com/excerpt-from-the-winds-of-winter/

Currently reading Book 5.

George Martin is a brazen author. His character development is well crafted. (Character depth is what I look for in literature and films. Without it I just drift away)The author takes many unexpected turns. It's lovely (for fiction)to be taken off-guard so easily.

As for the show...they have done a great job casting. When watching the first episode, I knew the characters from appearance and mannerisms. I'm not fond of the added sex and story changes but hey, that's Hollywood.

The first four books are fantastic, then (in my opinion) the author gets a little long-winded and adds in a lot of extra characters that make it more difficult to keep the threads of the story.

That can be said for most epic fantasy stories. It can't possibly end up with as many characters as Wheel of Time has. For now I'm watching the TV show, but I refuse to read any more fantasy series before they are completed.

I got there when Robert Jordan died and wheel of Time had to be finished by someone else. At the time I was also reading the Sword of Truth series and found I'd often forget important details from previous books by the time the next one came out.

Anyway I'm enjoying the show. I will likely pick up the books once they are completed.

I'd read the first three back-to-back about ten years ago and really enjoyed them, then waited and waited (and waited some more) for Book 4 - 'A Feast for Crows'. I have rarely been more disappointed in a book. It wasn't until Book 5 was published that I felt Martin actually got back to the 'proper' story of the first three books.

I'm enjoying the TV series. It think it's very well done overall, and any changes from the books work for me.

I just ordered them when hubby and I started dating 13-14 years ago, he was reading these books. I used to tease him, and here I am hooked on the show. Full circle They should be here tomorrow, hopefully the kids are prepared to fend for themselves for awhile!
