*sigh* Australia is the place I want to move to someday, when we no longer have ties to the US.

I am Aussie I am incredibly bias too, I love my country. I have been to every state and also lived in most states, with the only exception of Western Australia. I currently live in Queensland.

You have had some great suggestions so far. Also if you are only visiting Sydney do a trip to the Blue Mountains and you could always head up to the Zig Zag railway if you like trains.

Also a new theme park called Wet n Wild has opened recently in Sydney, we have one here in Queensland as well my kids love it. If you are fan of the water definitely go.

Bring plenty of sunscreen, a hat and great pair of sunglasses and mosquito repellent as well as they like to eat us here in the summer.

Have to say though Queensland is better though

What everyone else said (except Queensland is too hot!).

Taronga does Roar N Snore where you go glamping for a night smack bang in the middle of the grounds with the best views of Sydney Harbour. As soon as my girls are old enough I'll be making it an annual family event.

Janolan Caves in the Blue Mountains are wonderful if you're into nature stuff. The cable car ride through the mountains is breathtaking.

Manly Ferry from Circular Quay - you can do a shark dive at Manly Sea Life.

Canoe from (can't remember where) up towards The Heads.

The Opera House has some lovely bars out on the forecourt - there is opera-y stuff going on inside too.

Pub crawl through The Rocks.

The Sydney Festival starts in the first few days of Jan - lots of arty farty and foodie stuff going on.

OpenAir Cinema for a unique movie experience - don't sit under the Moreton Bay Figs or you WILL get bat shit on you! I can hook you up with tickets as they sell out pretty quickly ( my BFF helps run the event).

Panning for gold and Featherdale Wildlife park - good ones for kids.

There's always some football thing on (Rugby League or Rugby Union) - come see how the game was supposed to be played. Avoid the cricket - more boring than batshit.

You can do go karting at Eastern Creek - so much fun!

Try to see a sunrise over the beach - being an east coaster seeing the sunset over the beach on the West Coast of the US was an amazing experience for me.

I'd look at AirBNB for accommodation. I always recommend people stay in Balmain/Rozelle for the food, bars and villagey feel (a few Ks from my 'hood), Manly for beach life, Maroubra/Coogee for southern beach gangster/backpacker life or the Eastern Suburbs if you're soulless.

Our CBD is a bit of a ghost town but for shopping/nightlife.

And a G2G with me!

I may be biased having lived within the same 10k for virtually my entire life but Sydney is a beautiful place.

I’m not from there…but I did a week or two there back in ’93. Traveled the eastern half of the country. If I remember correctly: Sydney – Canberra – Melbourne – Adelaide – Cairns – Sydney.

It was a guided tour for the most part with a lot of free time. Had the most spectacular time. I don’t have anything special to offer up. It was all good. I fell in love with the place. I think you will have a wonderful time. I’ve been trying to get back there ever since.

I have a connection there in that I am related to a “notorious” politician of the mid 60’s to mid 70’s. My grandfather clued me in on the guy and ever since then I had wanted to go visit. He didn't tell me everything. I found a local library during some down time there and got quite the “read in” on the whole sordid story! Good to have some dirt in the family tree.

SBB - cricket is great. I love it

No footy on that time of the year either in January. They are winter sports.

That's that crazy humidity talking - Cricket should be illegal.

I'm an assistant to an ex-Wallaby. You'd think I'd notice no games.

SBB - It could possibly be the crazy humidity especially today 39 degrees, sadly tomorrow is going to 43! But I challenge you to go to a BBL Twenty20 cricket game and not enjoy it. The atmosphere is amazing.

Rugby Union pffft is not a real sport

Oh, oh, Moo.....I am so glad you asked this.

H and I are setting for a 3 month tour of Australia/New Zealand in a month. We are doing 2 weeks in Sydney, then skipping up the coast to Cairns, over to Auckland and a jaunt around both North and south Island.

I like many of the suggestions here and am going to print this out to take with. I kept meaning to come here and ask our aussie/kiwi friends for suggestions and kept forgetting. So thanks!!

I will keep track and let you know what works for us. I have an irrational fear of heights, but I am climbing that damn bridge if it kills me.

Leapyearbaby, you can do more than the Sydney bridge climb on that trip. There are three bridges you can climb and all are in the area you are visiting.

I still want to do the Sydney bride climb, but have done the one in Brisbane, which is not as high, as scary or as expensive. But definitely very windy! There is also one in NZ but I'm not sure where. You can do a sunrise or sunset climb for spectacular views.

You could claim to have done every bridge climb in the world!

I grew up in Sydney, and being military have lived in almost all and have visited all states.

Can you give me an idea of what you're interested in, I will be able to advise you better!

Have you considered visiting Darwin? It's the last bastion of the crocodile Dundee australia and is incredibly beautiful. It will be the wet season (monsoon) up there atbthat time of year but you will see some incredible tropical storms! The marines that are deployed there love the place even if Aussie soldiers generally hate being posted there as its very isolated.

I warn you though Australia is very expensive compared to the states. I was amazed at how affordable food is over there.
