I'm having to re-learn all my techniques of watercolour realism since I haven't used them for decades. One of my 2014 resolutions is to improve my realism--though my heart lies in abstracts. Here's my weekend practice. It's very rusty! I keep forgetting to wet the paper, so I end up brushing my colour rather than flooding it on.

Looks pretty real to me!

After I took this photo, I fixed the area on the base of the stem. The joy of watercolours is you can lift out any mistakes--but that's also the problem with watercolours. You can accidentally lift out good stuff. Grrrrr. It's taking a lot of sticktoitiveness for me to continue practising this!

..Lynn,

teacher raising hand here.

..did you paint it using a real apple in front of you?

..I'm seeing little creatures in the front. The little green fellow, dark nose, big front tooth/teeth and long swirlly tongue... leg and shoe at the bottom, like he's riding a bike

..the other guy has a green head and neck just to the left of the stem.. and he's wearing a red suit like Santa, with white trim on the sleeve.

..maybe your 'realism' apple has 'abstracts' inside???

..i enjoyed many apples from my students, at Hallowe'en I'd get candy treats, .. it was the greatest f'ing job on the planet.

keep painting Lynn.. we can tell that you "LOVE IT"

It's a Macintosh I had in the fridge-- for maybe too long????

somanyyears, I love abstract painting. I love acrylics. I am tolerating watercolours and barely tolerating realism. I haven't done anything realistic in so long--I was in university and YOU know how old I am, so that was quite a while ago, back (as my kids say) when the rocks were soft!!!! I thought I might use 2014 to stretch myself artistically, so in addition to my abstract painting, I am trying every weekend to regain the techniques and ease I had with both realism and watercolours years ago. It's a trying experience and I'm not sure I'll continue for long!

..Lynn,

..I think that with the 'realism' stuff, you are required to make it look exact.. a discipline to be maintained, whereas with the abstract, you are totally free; there are no scripted rules to follow.. it is spontaneous and can be as undisciplined as you choose.

..keeping your other skills sharp can't hurt eh??

..you get to decide when to stop 'practicing'..

..as long as you're having FUN!! that's what its all about.

It's the first day of a new school year in 'Straya, so I expected this to have a connection to that. But then I saw who posted it and had to open it to see what it was.

Your art work is amazing! I admire anyone who can make such beauty.

I can sometimes do stick figures well enough to win at Pictionary....... depending on my partner.

Glad I could be the first to offer you Aussie teachers the traditional apple!

SNY, I would say I'm passing the time quickly rather than I'm having "fun" at this point. Maybe if I keep at it, it will morph into fun. If not, I'm outta there!
