Yes, I know we aren't in general and I also don't mean existentially either....

Those of us on the continent of North America why are we here? Unless you are a Native American you or your ancestors came here... And it is DAMN COLD.

For giggles I looked up the temperature of my ancestors' native lands. Let me tell you where it is warmer than here:

London
Glasgow
Dublin
Berlin
Oslo (for Christ's sake)

The only place colder is Moscow.

I'm sure at one time while taking earth science I knew the answer but right now I'm just wondering why cities near the arctic circle are warmer than here in the Geat Southwest.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess they didn't come over here during the winter.

Well, I could tell you why my ancestors immigrated, but it would toe the line of the no politics/religion line awfully close, so I won't.

It was over things far more important than the weather though.

Things are really upside down. Alaska is having a warmer winter than usual and Chicago was just colder than the South Pole!

I know one of my ancestors was at Plymouth Plantation, but no idea about the thinking of the rest of them. I'm just glad there are warmer places to be!

lol!

I'm in northern Canada, and even for here, it's been an unusually cold and difficult winter. I'm sick of it! My ancestors are from France. Seems to be just chilly over there.

It's cold so we can enjoy 95 with high humidity in mid August!

Course, then we'll all be complaining about that.

Ama & I have something in common. I can go into great detail why each of my family lines came here, but it's not weather related and would most definitely cross into the political/religious realm.

About 3 weeks ago, we had a wind chill of -50C.

My family came here from Poland.

My dad always said they were just too dumb to drop their baggage somewhere warm....

And people think Polish jokes are b/s.

I am right there with you...

On my dad's side we are Native American and Dutch/German. There are not many stories though. With research we have been able to at leeast come to the conlusion that our ancesters were a band of Illioni Indian, but after that, we are not sure.

My Maternal side is different.

The story goes that my Italian grama's family came to the US because of the mafia there. The other story is that Uncle Frankie was the first male in the family to die of natural causes in 3 generations. (died in his sleep sitting on the couch). How much is true and how much isnt is hard to say. The generation that would truely know is long gone....but you know what they say - there is a grain of truth in every lie.

My Grandfather's Father (Polish) (if the story is true) is the son of a priest and a Nun. So my Great Grandfather was shipped to the US in his early teens for some reason (he went through Ellis Island at least) and that's pretty much that.

My greatgrandfather stowed away on a ship from Sicily to the US and jumped ship in New Orleans. That sure was a rough way to sneak across the border.

Several years ago, a guy I worked with had a grandfather who was a boat captain who sailed a ship from Sicily to New Orleans and did that until he got his entire family to the US and then retired. The timing would have been similar. HMMM...
