……..they are calling it.

Seriously….this nothing. I grew up in the Midwest and lived 15 years in the Philadelphia area. But for North Georgia….it’s a major snow storm.

The speed at this point in the picture was something considerably less than 5 mph…..on a 45 mph drag. And at this point…I was 4 miles from my house. It took me an hour to get there.

Everyone was talking about leaving early even before the snow started. In Philly….it was like after a half a foot of snow fell when we started saying: “Hmmm….I might need to think about leaving before it gets bad”.

I left work about noon…knowing the drive would very likely be Hell. There was maybe a half inch on the roads.

4 and half hours later…..I arrive home. And my commute is only 12 miles.

I believe my SO is still on the road…and she left about the same time I did!!

It’s 9pm and traffic is pretty much at a standstill in metro Atlanta.

It’s good to be in the South.

As a means of recovery….I had two of these.

I'm not seeing how this traffic is any different than any other Atlanta traffic.

Ha at Moo - seems like that to me as well! It was probably smart for everyone to really slow down when they aren't at all used to driving in the snowy mess but 4 hours is really extreme. Probably saved a lot of accidents but what a frustration!

Hey BR !!

This entire area is shut down. There are still people trapped on the interstates. They've been there since yesterday afternoon.

The thing about around here is that the roads ice over in a way I've never seen in all the places I've lived. Driving on a few inches of snow is one thing….driving on ice is quite another.

I've got a couple of collegues that only just made it home from yesterday….having walked the last two miles.

My SO was on the road for something like 12 hours before she made it home.

I have quite a hill at the entry to my neighborhood (going up on the way out). It may not get above freezing today. I believe I'm trapped for a day or two!! Yikes….and I have a 16 year old boy in the house. The food isn't going to last!!

What a freaking mess. This happens here every once in awhile…and each time the DOT and sister agencies are woefully ill-prepared.

Atlanta this morning:

Wow ... looks like maybe an inch or two!

I left work at 2:00. Went in a loop that would normall thake 5 minutes and an hour later I was back at work. Tried again at 5:30 and finally got home at 11:30.

First it was the traffic then that was suddenly gone by around 8 on the minor highways I was on but once the sun set all the slush turned to ice and it was hard to get any traction. At one point about six miles from home I could not get up the hill and was stuck until the DOT sand truck came through and gave us some traction.

Moo, I was expecting it to be like rush hour but there were alot more cars and people were driving less than 15 mph when we were moving. Any faster and you could feel the car getting away from you.

Fortunately I was able to avoid one of those but I came close twice.

Yeah that was sucky. 12 hours almost exactly. For a commute that normally is about 40-60 minutes (18 or so miles).

I had a lovely hug form my DD when I got home- she was waiting up for me. She made me dinner while I showered and I washed down dinner with a LARGE rum and diet coke.

On the plus side, I don't have to go to work today.

I know it's F&G, but realistically...the last time it snowed this much in Atlanta was something like 1910.

I feel bad for everyone down there because they really honestly do not know how to drive in the snow, and they don't have the capability to clear the roads properly.

I got stuck in the ATL airport that long once. Could have driven home 2x as fast.

And this was due to rain not snow.

In Ohio, 2 inches is nuttin'. Hell, where I am, they do NOT close the roads. Period. The county sherriff won't take the responsibility. The school I went to (30+ years ago) was closed *once* due to snow. And it took a blizzard to do it.

Honestly, when I hear of the chaos in the south caused by a few inches of snow, I think "Geez, what wusses." But I know they don't have much experience dealing with it. And driving in it? Hell, half the drivers on Ohio seem to forget how over the summer.

We got 8 inches in 2011 but it started on a Sunday night so nobody was on the roads and we didn't get the ice. The roads really were Ok until sunset and then they turned to ice. Clogged roads were the real issue this time.

The snow here turned to ice very quickly once people started driving on it. Our temps were hovering around 20 so that didn't help. And once the sun went down all the slush that wasn't already ice turned into rutted, pitted ice. In many places it is still an inch thick.

Salt would have helped but we simply don't have the equipment!

I can drive on/in snow having lived in the frozen north more than once. But inch thick ice?

Plus the city and its environs let people and schools all out at the same time. A million cars trying to drive on ice at the same time = chaos.

Still, had a day off yesterday and a half day or so today.

It will hit 60 this weekend so all will be back to normal soon!
