Okay, my DS is Texas bound, his actual worksite will be in Irving. Any suggestions, warnings, etc. concerning apartment hunting? He is a single guy, 26, car and motorcycle.

He is also an avid sailor. Does he give that up?

He's very worried about his football/baseball allegiance. Let's just say that the Cowboys aren't his favorite team....

I lived in DFW for years. Don't be worried, it's a good and safe place to live. He shouldn't have trouble finding a place. Sailing, not gonna happen. However, there are lots of lakes so he can still go boating and play on the water.

I wouldn't worry about that.

Lots of Texans don't like them either.

My nephew has been there 10+ years now and is a die-hard Packers fan. Wears his gear and all without hesitation.

He should check out Lake Ray Hubbard. It's pretty big.

There are a bazillion good properties. My mom worked for an apartment management company in Irving. He should look in Irving, north Arlington and Coppell.

He will take good natured ribbing about his sports affiliation.

He has a good sense of humor and makes friends easily. He's what my dad would call a mensch!

He's excited. He'll be in on the ground floor of a new medical technology that may save, or at least prolong lives. His passion is particle physics so he's living a dream.

As long as he can also sail!!!

If he plans to live in Irving, stay to the north. The south is a little Mexico. North is pretty nice though. Prices go up when you get into Las Colinas, but around Lake Caroline it's pretty nice. The little pharmacy off Irving Boulevard has the best milk shakes.

He can sail on Lake Ray Hubbard, White Rock Lake, Grapevine Lake and Lake Lewisville.

He might find a good place to live in Rockwall, which is on the shores of Lake Ray Hubbard. Lots of people want to live out there, so traffice to Irving every day might get old.

Here is a link to Grapevine Lake Sailing Club:

It's closer to his work. This area is really a nice part of Dallas, I think alot of Cowboys live in this area, and it seems to be where alot of young adults live.

I personally think he should rent for 6 months to get a "feel" for where he wants to live.

Also, if his sailboat is huge, best place is Lake Texoma - size is 139 square miles. About an hour north of Dallas.

Many people in Dallas rent a boat "slip" at the lakes, then your boat is ready when you are.

Irving is a great area, there are many many many new companies down there, and as a result lots of arpartments. They are competitive for young talent, so they all are pretty nice.

There are lots of places to sail/boat/fish, as others have posted, and about 11/2 hours north of Irving at the border to OK is Lake Texhoma, it has some of the biggest most beautiful Crappie I have had the pleasure to catch. If fishing is his thing. It can be pretty muddy in the spring as it is fed by the Red River.

I would tell him to look for a place on the edge of Irving going into Las Colinas, as that will be higher end, but not as costly as actually being in Las Colinas.
I lived in Coppell for a couple of years, and really really like Dallas and the surrounding area. There is tons to do, and it doesn't get super cold very often.

4 hours south, for a weekend is San Antonio, and that is a fun, fun, fun place, lots to do, and see. Austin is a reasonable drive and has a true college town feel to it, with a taste of TX added in.

I moved to Texas when I was 24 straight from my parent's home. Although I lived in the southeast. Lived there for 20 years. Best wishes to him and I hope he finds some places to sail. I know sailing is really big on the Gulf Coast - Houston/Galveston, Port Arthur - Inland lakes are more geared for motor boating but I am sure there are sailors there too.
