User Topic: Chicago area G2G Organizing thread?

I've started this thread to see how real the interest is for a G2G in the Chicago area and, if the interest is real enough, to plan and organize it.

I'm thinking a weekend in May (except the weekend of the 18th) or June, with activities depending on the number of people who will attend and their interests.

Please chime in with your interest level - maybe we can start by saying whether you're a Probable or Possible attendee. I'll keep updating this post with the list.

Also, if there is a weekend that won't work for you, you might as well add that to your post. Also, mention what you'd like to do, if you have a preference.

Possible activities include but are not limited to:

Friday night -

meet at someone's house or apartment
find a reasonably priced restaurant with a private room

Saturday

picnic/cookout by Lake Michigan for lunch or dinner
dim sum in Chicago's Chinatown for brunch
Chinese banquet for dinner
dinner at a restaurant
Do some ballroom dancing
baseball game
musical performance
Lincoln Park Zoo (probably a let down for anyone who was in Detroit)

Sunday AM
dim sum
pancakes
'traditional' brunch

*********************************************
I'm partial to ballroom dancing. I believe there are venues where we can get a big table or 2 in a location where the music doesn't drown out conversation, so people could spend part of the time conversing and part dancing.

Put me and Hubs on the maybe list.

Just depends on the dates everyone settles on.

Probable, please.

Also, I didn't know that it was ballroom dancing people were talking about! I was getting ready to do some twerking. Man, that could have been embarrassing for all involved!

Okay, I'm really not a twerker. I tend to lean towards the night club scene vs ballroom, but hey, I am game for anything!

ETA: As for availability, May or the first weekend in June works best for me.

We can go on the probable list too, depending on the date.

June would be better than May for us.

-Cubs games are a good experience and super easy to get to via public transportation. If they suck again, the tickets can get pretty cheap online. I routinely buy tickets for $8.

-Chinatown would be fun.

-Willis Tower and/or Hancock Building for newcomers.

- Navy Pier.

-Illinois Institute of Art (that's the one with the ramp to Millenium Park, yeah?)

-There's also a really cool Chicago Architectural tour (via boat, down the Chicago River). I believe they do that almost every day.

-If, and this is a huge if, this doesn't happen until July, then the Taste Of Chicago will be going on. It's a cool experience, but it'll make downtown fucking awful. Plus, Chicago heat/humidity is best experienced in April/May/June....July and August get downright nasty.

Hmmm......., I might be able to get a free flight to Chicago...... Always wanted to visit more than O'Hare there.... Can't think of a better time to do it. And what better way than with friendly 'tour guides'?!

I've been all over the place, so might as well keep up my traveling image! Depends on the date.

Does the ballroom dancing come with lessons?? Always wanted to do that but never had any cooperation.

June is more doable for us.

And I officially cast my vote for a Cubs game. QS is a die hard fan but never been to a game. Its on his bucket list.

Every year he crosses his fingers they win the World Series. Poor man.

June would probably be best for me. Consider me a probable to definite depending on the date.

I work in the city and have many work dinners. I can recommend some affordable restaurants with private dining options around the city.

PM me if you want more answers on those places.

Pegasus in Greektown has it's rooftop open after Memorial Day. It's tapas style/small plate and they usually have a Greek band playing.

Yup - Greektown offers many possibilities. There's a Turkish place with belly dancing shows, too.

The Cubs are in town the weekend of June 7; also the 1st weekend in May, but that weekend is generally cold and wet. Of course, this year, it'll probably be 95 degrees.

I'm going to let this hang around a bit to give others a chance to indicate interest. I suspect Friday is the high traffic day for F&G....

It's only about 4.5 hours for us, so we are a possible, at this time. We are going on vacation at some point, in May, so as long as it doesn't fall while we're gone we should be able to make it

ETA: I could fly that short distance, but after my luggage saga this past week, I will never fly into Chicago nor will I fly United, again...says the girl who fly's into Chicago and fly's United at least once a year

Count me in for a weekend in mid to late June. Snow days pushed us into a June dismissal. Lol. I HOPE to be 185lbs lighter by then.
