I think there are more guns in Canada bec more people seriously hunt. They are not there because of fear of other people the way they are in the States.

I just read this sad/sorry tragic story today about a man who was demonstrating to his GF that his guns were safe and killed himself by mistake.

I think alcohol was involved.

I live in FL. My experience has been that all the people I know who are gun owners should be banned from getting anywhere near one.

I'm not anti gun, I used to own one for clay pigeon shooting.

Idiots like this shouldn't be allowed to own a gun.
I have guns. EVERYTIME I handle a weapon, I properly clear it first even if I am the only one that has handled it and I KNOW it doesn't have a round chambered in the barrel. My DSSs know proper safety and use of both handguns and rifles.
That guy is lucky your husband didn't call the police on him.

I'm sorry this is the kind of experience your husband will now have to carry with him forever.

ETA: Clearing a weapon properly is the first rule of handling a any weapon EVERYTIME. Always assume it is loaded and NOT on safe.

The approximately 10 million guns in Canada are about 90 percent rifles and shotguns and only 10 percent handguns. I know lots of hunters, grew up with rifles in our home, but I've never even seen a handgun.

There are approximately 114 million handguns in the USA.

The numbers aren't comparable, no matter the ranking. I get what you are saying, Lynn.

Jrc, you can call elder services-they have to visit, interview for competency, etc. hopefully they determine that him owning guns makes him dangerous and remove the weapons.

Statistically, about 3-4% of households in Canada have a handgun.

No comparison being made - only facts.

The people who own handguns in Canada are people who use them to shoot at ranges as a sport. Maybe a gun collector or two. Gun collectors would actually skew the guns per capita numbers. Rural areas, everyone has a rifle or shotgun for hunting game, but I'll bet not one has it because of fear of their neighbours. We do not have the right to bear arms in our constitution. It's a privilege not a right.

We do not have the right to bear arms in our constitution.

The right isn't granted in the US Constitution either.

Any more than that would stray across the political line ...
