I've consulted with 5 AD(H)D specialists. The first 4 claimed specialties in AD(H)D. They offered generic stimulants (Adderall, Ritalin), branded stimulant/stimulant-like drugs (Vyvanse, Stattera), or other drugs explicitly aimed at the AD(H)D market (Intuniv).

None of theses drugs work for me.

I recently consulted a 5th shrink who specializes in pharmacology and AD(H)D. He thinks in terms of brain chemistry first, drugs 2nd, so he has a much wider range of drugs to work with.

I'm now trying out a drug that increases certain brain chemicals. It's not perfect, but it's had an amazing effect on me.

In any case, if you've got a choice, and if AD(H)D is a potential issue for you or your kids, I recommend looking for someone with broader expertise than just an AD(H)D specialty.

I'm aware there are potential issues with off-label uses of drugs, but given the fuzziness off drug testing, maybe there are potential issues with all drugs.

Amantadine.

Started on 100 mg 2X daily, but that screwed up my sleep. Now on 100 mg once a day, still with some sleep issues.

The effect is different from Adderall, more subtle. With Adderall, I focused - on whatever was at hand. On Amantadine, I just seem to pick up things on my task list and do them. I'm not aware of focusing, but I start and finish things, pretty much because I feel a desire to do them.

On no meds, I can't even keep a task list.

On no meds, I 'hear' a pretty constant message saying, 'It's no use - you can't finish this, so why even start?' On 100 mg/day of Amantadine, I think I hear something like, 'No, no, you CAN do this. Might as well start it.' On 200 mg/day, I don't hear the negative message at all. The message is more like, 'Let me at this so I can finish it and feel good and do something that's even more fun.'

Still early days, though. I accept the sleep problem because when I'm awake in bed, it's as if it's 1985, but I don't know how long my tolerance or the effect will last. I don't even know if I'm acclimated to the drug yet.

That's great! I'd heard it had been tried off label for ADD. And maybe it'll keep you from every getting the flu!
