Ok... this is a simple problem, but my math skill suck so...

You have the area of a square at 34in^2 and you need to solve for x... under the square you have 2x... what is x?

Not sure what you mean when you say "under the square you have 2x". Do you mean one of the sides of the square has a length of 2x?

If so, then the area of the square is 2x times 2x, and I think:

4x^2 = 34
x^2 = 34/4
x = sq root(34/4)
simplified
x = sq root (34)/2

(hate trying to show math without mathtype)

Sorry... Yes, one side = 2x

So, make it easier.

If you knew the area of a square was 36 sq. inches, and had to find the length of the sides, the first thing to remember is what you know about squares.

Squares have sides with equal side lengths.

Then you would think since the sides are the same length and one side is marked "x"... x times x must equal 36.

x^2 = 36
Take the square root of each side
x=6

You will use the same thinking for your problem.

2x times 2x equals 34 square inches

Don’t get to the end of your life and find that you lived only the length of it; live the width of it as well.

what is x?

The roman numeral for 10
The NYSE symbol for the US Steel Corp
The twenty-fourth letter in the ISO basic Latin alphabet
The greek letter Chi
The symbol commonly used as the name for an independent variable or unknown value. The modern tradition of using 'x' to represent an unknown was started by René Descartes in La Géométrie (1637)
Or in this case 1/2 times the positive square root of 34 since we are talking about dimensions
